I didn't write it, I just passed it along.

As far as I know, John Henry was a rock driller who was in a contest against a steam drill.

I actually have several star drills and have used them to drill through cinder blocks and concrete. Cinder blocks are pretty easy, concrete, not so much. Wham, turn a bit, wham, turn a bit, repeat about 500 x.

Concrete ain't TOO bad as long as you don't hit some re-bar. Limestone usually isn't too bad, but harder rock, not much fun. I've done a little hand drilling in my younger days, just enough to REALLY admire John Henry. For the sort of drilling he was doing, be using a longer drill with a helper (sometimes called a "driller's pimp") to position and turn it while the driller it the thing. Took a man with a lot of confidence in the driller to handle that helper's job, 'cause if he missed his strike you could get hurt, bad. Or killed....

Whoever wrote the story isn't, might say, as knowledgeable as he/she might be. I did such drilling as i did do with a fairly short drill and a single jack - and not the "nine-pound hammer" John Henry is supposed to have swung.

Arts and Crafts at the Depot again on Saturday, July 11th from 10 - 3.
Paintings, jewelry, needlework, baked items and more. In case of rain,
will be held Sunday instead. Stop around and do a little shopping.

Take a look at this article about the depot in the Poughkeepsie
Journal. The depot needs volunteers to help keep it open to the
public. You can learn a lot about local history at the Depot.

Our display of ice harvesting tools is growing.

Before mechanical refrigeration was invented, business and railroads
depended on winter ice harvested from local ponds. The ice was cut into
blocks and stored in well insulated buildings for use during the
summer. For example : The Bordens milk plant in Hopewell Junction had
an ice house that held 900 tons of ice blocks which would last though
the summer.

Our display is not complete yet. We would like to add more tools. Here
is a list of what we do not have yet.

Ice ax, ice shaver, ice adze, ice measuring iron, ice pickeroon, small
ice picks, splitting fork, hand plow, ice chipper, ice saw, spring
scale, splitting awl.

If you have any of these items we would love to add them to our
display. If you know of any that are available. let us know or stop
around to the Depot on a Saturday. or Sunday.

Perfect blue sky weather brought out the traffic on the Rail Trail
today.

New photos and an interpretive text panel have been added to our ice
harvesting display.
Some of the visitors today came over from Connecticut.

The Depot will be open again tomorrow 7/26. Stop around and check us
out.

Our next big project for the Depot park area is building a replica of
the original switch tower that guarded the railroad crossing at the
corner of the Depot. building. The plan is to build much needed rest
rooms into the lower level for access from the Rail Trail. We have part
of the required money in the bank but we need additional funds to make
it happen. The tower fund raising drive is now online at the following
link,

http://hopewelldepot.causevox.com

Check out the link to help us by donating online.

The original tower was built in 1892 and served until 1938 when the
former ND&C RR tracks were torn out and sold for scrap to Japan. The
track steel became part of the Japanese war machine and the tower was
salvaged to build a house on Bridge Street.

Help us out with any amount you can spare. The restrooms are really
needed. The nearest restrooms on the Rail Trail are 12 miles away in
Poughkeepsie.

A hot sunny day brought out the Rail Trail visitors today. Bottles of
cold water and soda were popular. We also welcomed two new volunteers to
help keep the Depot open on weekends.

We had one donation of a Fairbanks hand truck. The latest addition to
our diorama of the Hopewell Junction train yard is a pushbutton sound
system. Stop around and listen to the sound of steam whistles and
diesel horns,

The Depot will be open tomorrow (Sunday 8/16). We would be happy to
show you around.

Today was the East Fishkill Community Day and parade. This photo is
our float in the parade. It is a model of the switching tower we plan
to build for the Rail Trail in Hopewell Junction. It will have much
needed restroom facilities in the ground level. We are currently running
a fund raising drive for this project. Currently we have a little more
than half the money. You can contribute online at the following link.
Or you can stop by the Depot on a Saturday or Sunday with your
contribution to this worthy cause
.

We had perfect, blue sky, fall weather today for the visitors from the

Our model of the proposed control tower is now on display next to the
Trail. The "thermometer" shows that we have about half of the required
money to break ground on the replica which will have much needed
restrooms in the lower level. You can help with this project with a tax

Also, on Tuesday 9/29 I will be doing another railroad slide show at the
Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church at 1168 route 55 across from the high
school. Set up time is 6:30 and the show starts at 7:00. It is open to
the public. The subject will be the ND&C Railroad across Dutchess
County which later became part of the CNE Rwy and the New Haven RR.
Stop around and learn a bit of the rich railroad history of Dutchess
County.

Saturday was chilly and gloomy but Sunday sunshine brought out the Rail
Trail traffic.

We have added a conductor cut-out to our childrens loco. Now you can
take pictures of your children as "Mr Conductor" Or maybe you want to
be the conductor.

Don't forget, the tower fund drive is still active. We plan to build a
replica of the original control tower with Much-needed restrooms in the
lower level. You can make a donation at the Depot or online at the this
link.

Your donation will be tax deducible.

The Depot is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 4:00. Stop
around and we will give you the red carpet tour.

Our scale model of the control tower is now on display next to the
Rail Trail. Notice that the fund raising thermometer is near the top.
The fund raising campaign has only a few more days left to reach our
goal so we can break ground on the new tower.

We need your help to put us over the top and begin construction. You

The surveyor stakes are in place and we are ready to break ground for
the foundation of the new switch tower.

Don't forget the train show at the Poughkeepsie Civic center on Sunday
November 8.. We will have our usual table at the show. Stop around and
chat for a while.

The Hopewell Depot will now shift to winter hours. The Depot will be
open on Saturdays from 10:00 till 4:00.
There may be some construction around the site of the new switch tower
adjacent to the Depot. Stop around and catch up with what we are doing.

Construction work has started for the new switch tower. The hole has
been dug and a concrete floor installed. Work is in progress adding the
forms for the concrete basement walls.. We expect pour the concrete for
the walls on Sunday morning.

If any of you construction people are available, stop by and lend a
hand. There is also room for sidewalk superintendents to watch the
progress. In addition, we will be installing a set of security cameras
to keep an eye on the area

Does anybody out there know where we could find a set of switch tower
lever to be added to the display when the tower is completed ? We would
love to have some . Our tower originally had a 20 lever machine to
control derailers and semaphore signals..

The Depot will be open to the public on Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00.
Stop around and we wil give you the grand tour of what we are doing.

11-22-15 The insulated concrete forms were assembled like a set of big
Lego blocks. About 9:AM this morning the Bulldog Concrete Service trucks
arrived complete with a bulldog mascot ( his name is "Mud" )

Our intrepid band of volunteers struggled with the heavy concrete hose
to pour the walls for the new switch tower basement. By lunch time the
wet concrete was in place. By the looks of our volunteers they may want
to throw their clothes away rather than try to run them through the
laundry

The next step will be to remove the scaffolding. We expect delivery of
the restroom equipment and plumbing on Tuesday.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in the saga of building a Depot switch
tower
