Today was Volunteer Appreciation Day at the Depot. Everybody who had a
hand in restoring the Depot starting in 1996 was invited to the
celebration. We had food from the East Fishkill provisions and a big
cake.
We talked to a few old friends and generally celebrated the completion
of the major part of the building restoration. The next phase will be
to raise enough money to build a replica of the crossing control tower
that once stood next to the Depot. The new tower will have restrooms
in the lower level.

The next open sessions will be tomorrow Sunday 7/13 and Wednesday
7/16. Stop around and see what we were celebrating.

Nice sunny weather and lots of visitors from the Rail Trail put some
money in the donation jar.

Among the hardware donations was an original Central New England Railway
station sign advertising money orders by American Express.

Next Depot open sessions will be Sunday 7/20 and Wednesday 7/23.

The day started out grey and cool but by lunchtime the sun was out.
Early on there was not much foot traffic for the Arts and Crafts Expo
but later in the day the visitors came. There were crafts people
showing their wares and free lunch was provided by the Blue Fountain
Restaurant. In the afternoon there was entertainment by singer Rick
Soedler. He performed a program of popular railroad songs and , at
times, sounded like John Denver, Arlo Guthrie or Johnny Cash. A good
time was had by all.

We will do this again on the first Saturday in September and October.

Next open Depot sessions will be tomorrow , Sunday 8/3 and Wednesday 8/
6..

At the Depot the tour guides meet many interesting people from all over
the map. We have had visitors from as far away as Seattle, Sweden,
Canada, and even one group from Madagascar.

Would you like to become one of this friendly group and share the fun
for a few hours a month ?
Not sure you can do it ? Of course you can. We provide training and
documentation.

Stop by the Depot on a Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday and talk to some of
the current guides.
You can serve the community while you explore the rich railroad history
of Hopewell Junction.

A new plaque has been added to the visitor Center. It shows the names
of the major donors who sponsored the restoration of the Depot. Look
carefully, you might find your name on that plaque.

Next open session will be tomorrow (Sunday 9/7) and Wednesday 9/10.

You may remember Rick Soedler who performed at the Depot Arts and Crafts
Expo. His son built a model of the Hopewell Depot out of Lego blocks
and won first prize. Even the interior was complete.

"1st place at Poughkeepsie Plaza annual Lego contest, 11-13 age group.
11 year old Grant Soedler."

Congratulations to Grant.

Next Depot open sessions will be Wednesday 10/8 and Saturday 10/11.

The newest addition to our museum is a shelf display of telegraph
insulators. Stop around and take a look.

Rainy weather slowed down the Trail traffic but we did an interview with
a student working on a school history project.

Next Depot open sessions will be tomorrow (Sunday 10-12-14) and
Wednesday 12-15-14.

We held our annual Depot fund raising dinner Saturday evening at the
Blue Fountain Restaurant in Fishkill Plains. Among the guests was State
Senator Gipson and Marge Horton from the Dutchess county legislature.
MC for the event was our president Joe Sullivan.

The featured speaker was Mary Kay Vrba, Executive Director of Dutchess
County Tourism. She gave us a good run down on how much tourism does
for the County. It amounts to multi millions of dollars every year.

We also raffled off a table full of donated item which was dominated by
the huge plant from Sabellicos Florist and a selection of wines. It
was a very good evening.

Here's to another successful year at the Depot. With some luck and
fund raising, maybe next year we can celebrate the construction of the
switch tower.

On a chilly breezy day we hosted Boy Scout Troop 48. Christopher DiFede
earned his Eagle with a project to build four picnic tables for the
Depot grounds. Today was the official acceptance ceremony. Of course
he had assistance from several other members of the troop[ and the
materials were donated by Kurt Christensen and Mary Lauria. A brass
plaque with their names will be attached to the table.

After the ceremony, the troop spent some time inside the Depot soaking
up the rich Hopewell Junction railroading history.

With the weather changing, we are switching over to a winter schedule.
The Depot will be open for tours on Saturdays from 9:00 till 3:00.
