We had a good day with no rain. Mike got three window frames made up and
installed. More paint scraping was done on north wall and started on south
end. Braces for west wall were scraped and cleaned, ready for installing.
More soffit was installed on south gable overhang. We had a total of 6
volunteers working on the Depot and one volunteer working our info table. Jacky
did a great job of pulling in more volunteers and donors from the people
using the Rail Trail. We have 2 new signs up on 376 directing people to the
Depot donated by Mike Skok of ABC Awards. I think we should send him a thank
you letter for his donation. Hi address is- 1400 Route 82, Hopewell Jct.

Sunday morning worked at the Depot with my skid steer building a berm
along 2 side of the Depot to keep heavy rains from going under the crawl space
as per Charlie Traver.
Next Saturday we will be working on soffits, siding around the Bay window
area and more scraping on the south end.

Saturday 16 July, 2011 The main project for today was painting the south wall. We now have paint on three side of the depot. The weather was perfect for painting. At 4:00 PM we sat down to a volunteer appreciation meal.

The next work sessions will be on Wednesday 20 July and Saturday 23 July. Put on your old painting clothes and join the fun.

Today started out with a little rain but then the sun came out with 100% humidity. The morning was cool but the afternoon was a sauna but work continued anyway.
Our first shipment of new windows arrived this week and we tried one on for size. Meanwhile others were working on the north end of the roof. The depot is now sporting new signs on both ends. There will be one more sign along the edge of the roof on the west wall.
Next work sessions will be Wednesday 7-27 and Saturday 7-30.

Today's work was on soffits and windows plus some painting. The weather was
hot but with low humidity so it was comfortable working. Of course the Rail
Trail was busy including our local police patrol and we made a few new
friends and collected some donations. At the end of the day the depot looked
good with five new windows installed.
Next work sessions will be Wednesday 3 August and Saturday 6 August.

We had six volunteers working today and we accomplished a lot. Rebuilt one
attic vent, dug holes for deck supports, and salvaged a hundred year old
section of rail. More work was done on the north end of the roof overhang.
In addition we took in $260 in sales and donations. The new souvenir
spikes mounted on depot boards were popular. Two new volunteers signed up
for next week.

Don't forget, we have a tag sale next Saturday. If you have anything to
donate just bring it on Saturday morning 20 August. The artist who makes
the ceramic tiles of the depot said she would be here with a new supply in
the railroad colors.

Of course we will be working Wednesday 17 August and Saturday 20 August.

After the fog cleared we had a blue skies day. The work crew put together the deck frame and the sales crew sold items at the tag sale. One volunteer came all the way from Kansas City. We had a 1930 Model A Ford for atmosphere and a harp player for entertainment. It was a long day but everybody went home smiling.
The next work days in the plan will be Wednesday 8-24 and Saturday 8-27.
Come on down and join the fun.

Most of Wednesday's work session was dedicated to reducing the flooding possibilities. A new drainage area was added on the north side of the depot and a water barrier was built around the deck supports to block further floods. In addition, almost all of the water has been pumped out of the basement. We will definitely be in better shape for the next storm.

The next work session will be Saturday 3 September. Work will continue on the deck surface and other flood control item. Meanwhile there is still more work to be done on the north end of the roof overhang.

Saturday 9-10-11 We had crisp blue skies weather today. Just a touch of fall in the air. The main projects were salvaging the soggy lumber out of the flooded basement and more work on the deck and deck supports for the east wall. Meanwhile our electrician had worked on the interior wiring.
As a finishing touch we added a date over the only surviving original arch top door.
The next work sessions will be Wednesday 9-14 and Saturday 9-17.

Wednesday 9-14-2011 More new windows were installed and a new section of deck frame was added along the east wall.

The next work session will be Saturday 9-17-2011.

As it is with any organization, fund raising is a high priority. We are no different. We have the volunteers to do the physical work but we need money to buy the materials. At this date our treasury is very low and there are bills waiting to be paid. Any donation whether large or small will help finish the depot restoration. Our biggest upcoming expense is finishing the roof with material that looks like the original slate. The cost estimate for that is $10,000.

Send your donations to:
Hopewell Depot Restoration Corp.
P. O. Box 144, Hopewell Junction , NY, 12533.

We will have a table at the East Fishkill Community Day. We need volunteers to help with the sales and information. If you have some time to work with us, contact us at 845 221-9330.

New storm drains have been added to keep the flooding out of the basement. New base boards have been added along the deck and missing battens have been replaced. Meanwhile, the Rail Trail maintenance crew is on the job.

The next work session will be Saturday 9-24-2011

Saturday 9-24 was a cloudy day but no rain. The video crew from the Town of East Fishkill was interviewing people on the Rail Trail and around the depot volunteers. Since we have the grant money coming from the town, we began setting up scaffolding for the new roof covering.
Meanwhile our electrician was preparing the electrical service into the building.

The next work sessions will be Wednesday 9-28 and Saturday 10-1. The priority will be the new roof covering.

The Hopewell Depot now has a new sign donated by Bill Kimbark.

Despite the occasional drizzly rain our volunteers climbed on the roof to install new underlayment for the new roof.

The weather is supposed to be cooler and dryer on Saturday 10-1-2011. We plan to continue working on the roof.

We need volunteers with experience in roof work.

Th have been making a lot of progress, and have to call that great.

Our local station (ex-HE&WT, ex-SP, 1912, Nacogodches, TX) is (finally going to open next Friday. Structurally restored several years ago, but just sitting empty. I will probably serve as a volunteer docent some once it gets opened up.

10-8-2011 We had a beautiful, crisp fall day today. The main project was the underlayment for the new roof. It is almost completed.
In addition we did a bit more of the trim around the deck. The faux slate for the roof is on order and should be delivered in a week or so. Then we will arrange with Lupine Roofing and Toll Brothers to have the professional crew install the new roof covering.

Our Rail Trail visitors for today included sled dogs. He "steers" the dogs by voice commands. The dogs enjoyed bits of ice from our cooler.

Our next work sessions will be Wednesday 10-12-2011 and Saturday 10-15-2011.
Work will continue on the deck trim and the roof underlayment.

We would like to remind all IBMers to add Hopewell Depot Restoration to their charity list this year. The ECCC campaign started last weekend.

Stop around and see for yourself what we are doing. We would be glad to have you join in.

Today was a brisk fall day with lots of wind blowing the leaves around. The forms for the new sidewalk are now ready for concrete. While the digging was going on several other volunteers were touching up the paint and giving some TLC to the only remaining original door. They also organized a bucket brigade to move the salvaged bricks back onto the roof to for the chimney restoration.

Despite the wind and occasional sprinkles, there were quite a few Rail Trail visitors who bought T-Shirts and made donations.

Our next work sessions will be Wednesday 10-19 and Saturday 10-22. Stop around and chat a while.

In perfect October weather we got a lot done. The concrete truck arrived before 7:00 AM to pour the new sidewalk. A broom makes a very good non-slip surface on the walk. Later in the day the top of the chimney was rebuilt. A very productive day at the depot.

The next work sessions will be Wednesday 10-26 and Saturday 10-29. We expect the new roof slate to be delivered any day now. There is plenty of work to do on the east deck and the interior.
