10/5/2013 We had some interesting donations today. One was an antique
telegraph acid battery jar with a small acid concentrate bottle. This
was the electrical battery source that powered early telegraph systems.
We need to find some of the electrodes that go into the acid solution.

We also got two Borden'silk bottles and a New Haven RR lock that was
used in the Hopewell Junction yard.

Don't foget to send in your reservation for the annual fund raising
dinner at Daddy O's restaurant. The featured speaker will be Will
Tatum, the new Dutchess County Historian.

Next work session will be Wednesday 10/9/2013.

We are planning to salvage the siding and interior walls of a very old barn once owned by the Brinkerhoff family.
We need volunteers for next weekend to do the job before the barn is torn down.
We need the lumber for our next big project.

Rich Taylor will be leading the group. Contact him if you are available to help.

On a crisp cool fall day we had a lot of traffic on the Rail Trail

We also had an interesting donation. Can you guess what it was used
for ?

CLUE: It is a hand pump.

10/26/2013 The sky was blue but the wind was cold. Our Eagle Scout
project paid off today. Eagle Scout Christopher DiFede (in red) came
with scouts from troop 48 to deliver four new picnic tables for the
Depot grounds. One of the tables has a wheel chair accessible extension.

The Depot now has blacktop walkways and new grass seed planted.

We had our usual table at the Poughkeepsie train show today.
Had some help from three of our volunteers: Paul Stich, Charlie Macdonald
and Bud Parsons.
Sold a few books and T shirts and talked to a lot of old friends.
It was a good social coccasion and good PR for the Depot.

Next work session at the Depot will be Wednesday 11/13/2013.

Not much activity on the Rail Trail today. That was probably because
the temperature this morning was 17. We had the first snow of the
season on Monday.

Today people from the County were at the Depot planning the Rail Trail
Grand Opening on Saturday. There will partial Rail Trail closing and a tent
set up for refreshments in the parking lot. The actual ceremony is
scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday 11/16. The weather forecast says it
should be in the 60's on Saturday.

If you have an antique car to show, bring it around to the Depot
Saturday morning and we will make it part of the display.

Next Depot work session will be Saturday 11/16/2013.
Stop around and join the fun.

Today at the Depot was the official grand opening of the Dutchess Rail
Trail. Former County Executive, Bill Steinhaus was the guest of honor
as the Rail Trail was named "William R. Steinhaus Rail Trail". Bill's
wife did the ribbon cutting.

There is also a plaque honoring people who were instrumental in the Rail
Trail planning and construction.

The Hopewell Depot hosted a large crowd under beautiful blue skies.

12/5/2013 We took our baggage cart and our new toy loco to the
Unionvale Middle School Christmas celebration. There were 700 kids plus
parents there from all over the school district. The theme was "Polar
Express". Many of the kids climbed on our loco and had photos taken by
smiling parents. It was a fun evening.

The picture is of the crew that built the loco. Stop around to the
Hopewell Depot on Wednesday or Saturday and you can see them in action.
Next work session will be Saturday 12/7/2013.

We got about 6 inches of snow last night. The Depot looks good in a
fresh coat of snow.

Here is a sample of the good words coming back about our Depot.

Bernie
*****************************************************************************
Nice pix, postcard shots!!
We have about 9 inches, all cleared.

Great photos Bernie. Would you consider making some Christmas/holiday
cards to sell next year??? I think they might sell. I'd buy some,
Barbara Hespenheide

Great pictures!! They should go on Christmas cards for the
organization's use and for sale in the depot!!
Take care,
Robert Koffsky
Beacon, NY

All it needs is a train!
Paul Payton

Awesome photos and again, fantastic job to all that made this
restoration
possible!

Very impressive restoration and photos!
Nancy Kelly

Definitely! Looks like a photo from the past!

It LOOKS lovely!

Yes, it looks nice! You´ll have a white Christmas. We don´t have snow in
Skåne, the southern part of Sweden, and we don´t expect any snow before
Christmas either. I guess we´ll have it in February-March, when everyone
is looking for spring.
Eva

Hi Bernie,
The station looks great. What are the hours there? Are you opened on
Saturday?

Very Pretty! Thank you,
Laurie

Very pretty, love the windows

Fresh fallen snow makes everything look amazingly beautiful !

Beautiful

That should be a Holiday card

Love the picture I agree it should be a card.

Perfect holiday card picture.

If ever a time machine were to be invented, I'd dial up "1925" and land
at the Hopewell Depot. I'd take a ride across the Poughkeepsie Railroad
Bridge and draw incredulous stares from other passengers when I tell
them that 85 years hence, people will be cycling across that bridge to
Hopewell.

Great shot

all aboard---

wow

Where is Hopewell Jct?

12/21/2013 We have a new book hot off the presses. This book tells the
story of how the Hopewell Junction Depot served the railroad and the
community for more than 100 years then was abandoned and damaged in an
arson fire. The second part is about how a group of dedicated
volunteers restored the Depot into a Visitor Center for the Rail Trail
and a small museum of Hopewell Junction railroading. Part three has a
collection of photos around Hopewell Junction from 100 years ago or more.

This book is for sale at the Depot for $15. Stop by and pick up your copy.
The Depot will be closed over Christmas holiday but open on 12/28.

On a bright sunny day we had a lot of traffic from the Rail Trail. Took
in a couple donations for our museum and sold a T Shirt. It was a good
day. Added a few names to our mailing list.

We have a children's story coloring book for sale at the Depot for $4.
It is the adventures of a little mouse who lived in the Depot more than
100 years ago. Stop by the Depot on Saturday and pick up your copy. While
you are
there you can see where the mouse lived.

The Depot will be closed on Wednesday (New Years Day) but will be open
on Saturday 1/4/2014.

The temp was minus 9 when we got up this morning. With 6 inches of
powder snow the Rail Trail had very little traffic today. Meanwhile,
the Depot looks good with a fresh coat of snow.

Next work session will be Saturday 1/11/2014.
