6/9/2013 We had a great time at the depot open house today. We had music
and refreshments plus free tours of the new museum section. Many of the
RailTrail users stopped in for a look around. We even made some money
too.

The next work session will be Wednesday 6/12/2013.

6/29/2013 The perfect weather brought out a lot of traffic on the Rail
Trail. Our volunteers installed vents in the corners of the deck to
prevent moisture build up. Also Philip did a cleaning job on a couple
of antique travel trunks to go on display.
Next work session will be Wednesday 7/3/2013.

7/10/2013 We had sunshine and pouring rain alternating today. Even so
we had a number of visitors from the Rail Trail. Many of them used the
shelter of the depot roof overhang and the deck benches to dry off.

The "Independence Belles" stopped by the depot for a tour and they gave
us a nice donation check.

Next work session will be Saturday 7/13/2013.

The attached photo of the sign is our next big project.
We plan to build a replica of the crossing control tower that once stood guard over the Maybrook Line in Hopewell Junction.
We plan to put much-needed restrooms with flush toilets in the lower level.

This project is already underway with architects plans, land surveys and overall site planning.
We are working with the County and the Town to cover all the building requirements.
The site plan includes landscaping and picnic tables which are already under construction.

Of course all this will require funding. We will be asking for donations, grants and any other sources to raise the money.

Join us in turning the area into a Historical Park for the benefit of the Town, the County and everyone who enjoys the Rail Trail.

We will be asking for donation, and also sustaining funding such as monthly payments to pay the electric bill and insurance etc.
Maybe you could even remember us in your will or endowment.

In any case we have the volunteers ready to start work as soon as we can get all the plans in place and get enough funding.

Meanwhile our next work session and tours of the depot will be on Wednesday 7/24/2013

Come on down and join the fun. We will roll out the red carpet.

P. S. Don't forget "Mr. Conductor" will be doing a railroad talk and slideshow in Millerton tomorrow (7/21/2013).
The show starts at 2:00 PM in the library annex on Century Blvd in Millerton. It is free and there will be refreshments.

Bernie Rudberg AKA Mr. Conductor

7/24/2013 Do you have an old worn out American flag ? If so we can take
care of it. We have placed a "retired flag" box on the deck of our
depot. Any old American flags placed in this box will be given a proper
and dignified ceremonial retirement. Bring your old flags and let us
take proper care of them.
Next work session at the depot will be Saturday 7/27.

7/31/2013 Perfect weather today brought out visitors on the Rail
Trail. Our volunteers worked on finishing up door sills etc and our
restored baggage cart now has a barrell and two antique travel trunks
for display.
We are in the planning and fund raising stage for the control tower
replica. The Rail Trail needs rest rooms. Help us out in any way you
can to build that tower.
Next work session will be Saturday 8/3.

8/14/2013 On a sunny cool August day our volunteers built a new bulletin
board for depot news items.

In addition to raising funds for the control tower project, we also are
looking for volunteers to work on our participation in East Fishkill
Community Day. We normally have a table in the Community tent and we
also would like to put together a float or display for the parade.
Last year we earned a second place trophy with our restored baggage
cart.
What can we do this year ?

Next work session will be Saturday 8/17/2013.

8/17/2013 Perfect weather today for a lot of Rail Trail visitors.
Meanwhile our volunteers installed a new bulletin board for depot notes
and other interesting items.

We are still looking for part time tour guides for the depot. Very
flexible hours and easy training in local railroad history. Come on
down and join the fun. Find out why Hopewell Junction was the railroad
center of southern Dutchess
Days at the depot are full of good conversation and a little gossip too.

Next work session will be Wednesday 8/21.

8/28/2013 Here is one of our regular visitors on the Rail Trail. He
lost a leg in Afghanistan and now races with a custom built hand powered
trike. He lives in Hopewell Junction but travels a lot to races up and
down the east coast. He says on a good stretch of road he can easily
top 55 miles per hour.

A new door for the west wall is taking shape. This arch-top door will
restore the west wall to what it looked like when it was built in 1873.

Next work session will be on Saturday 8/31/2013.

9/4/2013 The main project for today was installation of the new arch-top
door in the southwest wall of the depot. Our volunteers have restored
the west wall door to what it looked like when it was built in 1873.
They also built a rack for brochures on the wall next to the northwest
door. Work continues on the museum displays.

Next work session will be Saturday 9/7/2013.

9/14/2013 Cool fall weather brought out lots of people on the Rail
Trail. Also found on the Rail Trail was an injured owl. We brought
him back to the depot but he could not fly. We took him to a local
animal hospital and we hear he is now recovering under their care.

We are still looking for people to help with our float for the East
Fishkill Community Day parade which is only a week away. If you can
help with float decoration or march in the parade let us know.

9/18/2013 We are getting our float ready for the East Fishkill Community
parade. We still nee volunteers to ride on the float or walk along in
the parade. The theme is "A living museum of railroad workers". I will
be in my conductors uniform and Rich will be the engineer with overalls
and a red bandana. We will be demonstrating some of the tools used on
the railroad every day many years ago. After the parade we will join the
Community Day festivities.

If you would like to dress up and join us, come to the parade starting
point on Palen Road, slot #21, on Saturday morning 9/21/2013 before the
10:00 AM start time.

Hope to see you on Saturday.

9/21/2013 We entered our "Working on the Railroad" float in the East
Fishkill Community Day parade and won a trophy. The inscription on the
trophy says:
"First Place. Most Community Spirit". Three cheers for all the
volunteers who made it possible.

Next work session at the depot will be Wednesday 9/25.
Come on down and join the fun.

9/28/2013 Blue skies and cool weather brought out the rail trail
traffic today.

In our nuseum we are putting together a display of ordinary household
item that our grandparents might have used. Can you indentify the items
in this display case ? If not, the answers are behind the small doors
above the case.

Come on down and see how many things you can identify.

Next work session will be Wednesday 10/2/2013.
