Back in the pre-Aldene 60s, I clearly remember all of those ancient semaphore blades that bristled from the signal bridges at the CNJ's old Jersey City terminal. Can anyone provide some detail on their operation? Also, were any preserved, or where they all destroyed after the terminal was abandoned in 1967? Thanks for any info.  John

Hi John,

I've seen pics of this vast array of semaphores - very impressive. Sorry but I haven't a clue as to their disposition.

The CNW had similar signal bridges with multiples of semaphores signalling the many leads and crossovers into their Northwestern Station in Chicago. These semaphores may still be in use today or may have been replaced with color light signals. While the through trains are long gone, Northwestern Station is still a bee hive of activity with even more suburban trains arriving and departing on the three METRA lines it serves than in the CNW days.

Hi, Mark: Thanks for your input. I've seen pics of those old C&NW signal bridges; they always reminded me of the CNJ's at Jersey City. Ceratinly, it took a sharp-minded engineer to keep track (pun not intended!!) of that mass array of semaphores!! John
