CSX has a Three-train Wreck

January 6 wasn't a good day for trains near VAlparaiso, Indiana. Train one, two locos and 77 empty ethanol tankers was stopped, apparently for a signal. Tain two, also a west-bund with two locos and 60 cars rear-ended it. Train three, three locos and 48 cars hit the derailed locos and cars from he other two that had apparently fouled the parallel track it was on. Fire resulted. Two (head-end crew of train two) were injured, but nothing life threatening per news report. Sounds like a real mess.

About 1:15 p.m. multiple 911 calls were received reporting a train crash at County Road 500 E and County Road 600 North, in a rural area of Porter County northeast of Valparaiso, said Porter County Sheriff’s Dept. Sgt. Larry LaFlower.

Whee. Way for the wrecking train, eh?

That is a really sad situation.    With respect to CSX fans, this road has always been good at wrecking/derailing trains.  NS was tough to work for, and most of us hated them, but they ARE sticklers for safety, and it is reflected in their constant wins of the Harriman.

At least the crew on the second track (train 3) apparently wasn't hurt. Doesn;lt sound like they had much (if any) chance to dodge the trouble.

You wonder just how train 2 came to rear-end train 1 - did they run a signal? or what.

Clyde,

From what I've heard the ethanol and the freight were to supposed to have been stopped to let the intermodal pass by on the second track. So my guess is that the freight train didn't get stopped in time and slammed into the rear of the ethanol. Which threw everything onto the adjacent track just as the intermodal came around the curve.

That sort of thing can happen, all right. There was a VERY bad wreck on the NYC (some time 1944 i think), in a three or fiur track section aongside the Hudson. Derailment on one fouled adjacent tracks and a passenger train plowed into the wreckage before anybody could get protection out.

Some photos of the CSX units involved have popped up on Rail Pictures.

Caption on the picture says it's 517 that was on the freight train.

5284 that was leading the Q161.

You guys think either one of those will be repaired?

I'd guess that both will be dismantled and any useful components salvaged, rest to scrap. Fire damaged trucks and internal components (and possibly frames weakened as well) suggest better to salvage what is good, scrap the rest, buy replacement units.

I can guarantee you that the CN unit will be scrapped once it gets back on CN property.
