Chessie Mike, you have a wonderful photo there of the SUV going around the gates.  Too bad there wasn't a front license plat.  That would have been one to give to the local PD.

If nothing else, send it to the state DMV.  Perhaps they can use it as a justification to require vehicle plates on the front!

Can probably forget that (requiring front tags). Runs the cost up and unlikely the public would stand for it. Hear there is some consideration here in Tejas about doing away with front tags. i hope they don't.

Why is this guy in a hurry to get across the tracks? Lights flashing, bells ringing, arms coming down...

oh and the train that runs at up to 79MPH! According to the time stamp the photos were taken 15 seconds apart.

So the train was 15, maybe 20 seconds away and at 79 mph a passenger train that was (let's say) 10 cars long would have taken less than 10 seconds to get by. Real serious delay required to obey the law, eh?

Good estimates. The train was 8 cars long and a photo 9 seconds later shows it well clear of the crossing. Also the Camry driver had to get on the brakes right after the crossing for the congestion at the School Zone just out of the pictures.

FRom some of the NTSB reports, the gate position indicated train was around 15-20 seconds away. 79 mph is 115 feet/second. Passenger cars are about 85 feet long. 10 of them would take about 7.5 seconds to pass at that speed. Engine a bit shorter, but make it easy and say it is 85 feet too. Not a difficult calculation, not with electronic calculators.

Note which side of the crossing gate the car is on. He is quite literally in the shadow of the train. Amtrak train #66 through Lee Hall, VA on 3/21/14. Good thing he was on track #2.

Another one from Lee Hall. Date Line 6/18/14, CSX train H773-18 with SD50 #8630 is shoving east toward the crossing with one tank car. The Caddy ran around the lowered gate. Crew on the ground warned the engineer by radio.

I guess that ground crew could have gotten tag numbers and called the cops. We are a small town, they would have responded, taken statement and the next time they saw the Caddy, written a ticket.
