Any suggestions on where one can buy a rail car...

I am located in California and am looking for a used rail car to use at my home as a "guest house".  Renovation is not a problem, nor is transportation costs.

Does anyone know where I should start my search?

Hi,

Surf the Net for the American Association of Private Railcar Owners. They can show you what is available, what has been done to restore such cars, etc. Another avenue is at LAUPT (LAUS). There you might already be aware of several privately owned railcars, including the Silver Lariat, ex-CZ, that is stored there, on a private siding with four stub tracks. It is just about right under the Gold line's tracks as the ROW rises towards Chinatown.

These sources might also give you an idea of just how deep your pockets will have to be. ie the size requirements for your wallet. Best of luck to you, many of these beauties really are worth preserving, and running.

What a fabulous idea!!

You might also try this website:

www.iltransit.com

They have passenger cars for sale or lease, in varying stages of "fixer-upper-dom", as well as parts and accessories.

Of course, you'll also want to check on your local zoning ordinances, (or perhaps lobby to change them if necessary).

Best wishes!  If you are successful, take some photos and share them with us!

Regards,

Norm
