...an finally, we had little time or energy for a real stop at Lewistown, and the baby needed lunch...so we satisfied ourselves with this distance shot that my wife took from the car as Rt 22 flies over the valley.  You can just make out the BNSF helper unit running 2nd.

Thanks for coming along.  Hope you enjoyed the trip.

Watch your step as you leave the train!

Some jinxes...

Amtrak did come thru Altoona during this photo shoot, but I was using my film camera, which jammed.

Also, I did manage to get to Juniata Shops on the first pass thru town, but not on the second.  So the light isn't very good.  But here are the shops...

Altoona to Michigan - By Charlie_O on 08/01/07 at 09:21:59 - 'NS_9377_HSC.jpg' 241 KB
Just returned from a week-long road trip that included two stops in Altoona and the Curve, as well as fanning opportunities in the Lansing/Ann Arbor area of Michigan. There are lots of photos, so decided to give this trip its own thread.  Hope you enjoy the ride.

July 26, 2007: Horseshoe Curve

Arrived at the Curve around 10am under cloudy skies with scattered showers forecast.  Just missed an eastbound Amtrak train that rumbled above our heads as we waited to board the funicular.

After we arrived at the top, things were quiet for awhile, and I was beginning to doubt the Curve's renowned traffic levels.  But then things started to pick up, with a westbound stack train.... even a pair of Catfish were a welcome sight.

I would like to thanks the Boy Scouts for making this trip, the Friends of the C&TS for making it a great time, and the C&TS for making the engines put on a great show. It was a great trip, and I should try to make it out there again.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures!

Nearby, the San Luis Valley does some switching (only railroad I've seen that uses a wye for diesels)

This railroad recently bought ex-Southern Pacific 2-6-0 1744 for use on tourist trains. It was supposed to come today, but the event was canceled when the Galloping Goose that was supposed to show up couldn't

These are two standard gauge reefers from the Rio Grande. The flatcar behind them is an idler car, which standard and narrow gauge cars can be coupled to

There's smoke rising from 495. But it's just from 487 a distance away

The speeder chases the train.
The line here was once three rail (standard and narrow gauge). The nearby San Luis Valley Railroad runs on the old standard gauge tracks between Antonito and Alamosa

487 and the train. The grade between here and Osier stays down to about 2%. While the Chama half has numerous trestles, the Antonito half has two tunnels and the Toltec Gorge

We continued working on the coal tipple for the rest of the day, and camped out near Osier.

The next day, on Thursday, June 21, we head out on the bumpy road out of Osier to Antonito.

Whereas the Chama yard is rather authentic, the Antonito yard originally had nothing. Today, it has a small yard, a loop track, and shop buildings
