Base antennas - By co_riff on 10/09/06 at 18:12:24 - 'PA090014.jpg' 56 KB
Guys : Here is a photo of my base scanner antenna. My question is is this really a scanner antenna?I got it from a friend fifteen years ago.

Has three horizonal prongs that are about a foot and ahalf long and one vertical prong that is the same lenght.

Is there a better antenna that I can buy?  Curtis

Re: Ham radio or scanner? - By Billman730 on 04/18/06 at 21:51:05 - 'AlBill1831.jpg' 55 KB
Hello ! It's to bad this thread is not as active as others. I agree with the majority that Ham portables are way cool for railroad and with some you can talk back to the trains. But a simple Bearcat handheld is the fastest to load channels, scan and keep track of what you are listening to. Most Ham Portables require an engineering degree to use them and don't hit the wrong button while on a trip having forgot the manual.....   Pic is of my younger days on the Poughkeepsie Bridge during the Penn Central days.

Mmmmm So Scanner along Hudson is not so helpfull. I remember last 2003 when I was along Hudson without a scanner other railfans told me:

"...you're without a scanner? If you're a railfan you must have it!..."

May be is correct on other lines......not this!
Thanks a lot for the suggestions.....see you there!

Here's the K3SMD Field Day site at the La Plata (MD) station. Northbound 5-unit train provides a welcome diversion. Bob (KB3KOW) observing train from inside the fence. Photo courtesy of John (K4HQK).

Here is my setup although this setup is used to listen to Airtraffic since i just use my radio for listening to the RR.I also have a $20 Radio shack antenna thats on a mast about 25ft in the air and it just doesnt get the range like the Radio Shack magnet mount antenna the Airport i listen to is about 11 miles away i can hear the tower talk when i use the magnet mount but not when i use the antenna on the mast and i even have an amplifer GRE 3001.Here is the link to the feed i have going for the Lafayette Airport and here are some pictures of the scanner i use and where the antenna is mounted.

Henry, you were asking about a 'trailer hitch antenna mount' a few posts back. Found this to be interesting and might give you an idea of where to start.

I got a ham radio this week and so far it seems to do better
than a scanner on the RR band. It's a Vertx150. I can
run it for about two days on a twelve hour charge.

Ol'Yeller (MT500) - By XNJon on 12/22/03 at 20:45:38 - 'MT5002.jpg' 35 KB
In response to what BNSF_1088 was saying in the other thread about RR radios.
I own several (wife says too many) decommed Motorola radios mainly from Chessie and a few from CSX. I purchased them at he time (about 5 years ago) from a seller out of Jax that went to a CSX auction and bought 1000 units. He disabled the TX portion and tuned the RX.
The MT500 is a tank! and have several crews see my radios and wish they were still using them as they beat the pants off the crap their using now.
Though my MT500's are not the scanable versions, they are a full 5watt and tuned to my Crystal selection. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've been out in places like Fostoria and pulled down distant signals that others can't seem to get....all with the stock Motorola (Blue) tuned rubber duck! and by the way nary a fart of intermod (that's one nice thing about crystal radios) The front ends are bullet proof if they are tuned and that's why I have several as some are just more sensitive than the others.
I also have a gaggle of parts donors to help out in the future.
The disadvantage?
I can't scan for other roads when I'm out of town for other roads.
The 15volt Nicads are not cheap and require full discharges as they are membatts(though on a good charge I can have the radio on 24/7 for a week with no prob).
All in all one of the best radios for RR RX I've found. Sometimes older is better

BTW-Search Ebay for MT500's and check out this site LINK URL

This is a shot of my two best radios in action at home.
