There is no evidence of a shipwreck in the area and no newspapers from that era have not turned up a ship losing deck cargo or carrying locomotives.

-Until the Marconi wireless was invented in the 1890's there was generally no way of knowing what happened to a ship.

The NJ Museum of Transportation was trying to do something with them, but AFIK, they are not coming up.  There is a Dive NJ website that has the most information.

This has shown up in several threads, e.g. New Jersey, steam, and wrecks.

I recently had the opportunity to see firsthand some of the work that has gone into preserving items from the wreck of the Monitor that were salvaged off the coast of North Carolina. Check out their web site: http://www.monitorcenter.org/

The incrustations that covered those parts had done a remarkable job of helping to preserve things from the ravages of sea water. In my opinion, nothing should be done with these engines until it is clear that the resources to preserve them are assured of. It will not be an inexpensive operation to get them up, but that will only be a drop in the bucket of the total expense of their preservation. Also it should be noted that proper preservation will take a long time. We may not see the results, but our children and future generations will benefit from this.

Here's the website about the locos: http://njscuba.net/sites/site_locomotives.html

I could not think of the term, "Arrested", as used in this article; I kept thinking "impounded" or just plain "off limits".

Yes, newcomers are most welcome. Always happy to get a new viewpoint. The more you can contribute, the more welcome (as everywhere in my experience).
