Adirondack Scenic Railroad Needs Help and Support!

ATTENTION ALL RAILFANS!  The “Adirondack Scenic Railroad” and “Next Stop Tupper Lake” non-profit organizations NEED YOUR HELP!  The Adirondack Scenic Railway operates tourist operations along the Southern (Utica NY-Old Forge, NY) and Northern (Lake Placid, NY-Saranac Lake, NY) sections of the former Adirondack Division of the New York Central Railroad.  This rail / transportation corridor is leased to the ASRR by the New York State Department of Transportation which owns this right of way.  The historic Adirondack Division rail corridor traverses through the scenic Adirondack Mountain region of upstate NY and has great potential for tourism, economic development, and light freight operations if the entire route from Utica to Lake Placid is rehabilitated.  Recently a competing advocacy group (Adirondack Rail Trail - ARTA) has formed and has been very active and vocal in trying to whip up public support for tearing up the rails, scrapping them and using salvage proceeds to build a recreational bicycle, pedestrian and snowmobile trail in its place.  They have enlisted support from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy to champion their cause and conduct a study to bolster their position. They are actively circulating petitions to lobby New York State’s Governor and Elected Officials to tear-up the tracks. Recently the ARTA group has been circulating their petition at events such as the Lake Placid Iron Man and claiming that the Adirondack Railroad is a "Ghost Railroad" and the public would be better served by removing the rails.  There currently is a funded plan to construct a Rails-AND-Trails segment from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake.  The ASRR and NSTL fully support this concept where practical along other sections of the corridor possibly to Tupper Lake.  The ARTA group is unwilling to compromise however on this mutually beneficial concept. ARTA wants the rails removed – Period!

What Can You as a Railfan do to Help? The Next Stop Tupper Lake organization has posted an online petition drive for the rehabilitation and preservation of this rail corridor which will be delivered to government officials in Albany.  This petition can be found at http://signon.org/sign/adirondack-railroad-lake.fb20?source=s.fb.ty&r_by=5288532
Please leave positive comments of support for the preservation and rehabilitation of this rail corridor and for its future tourist and transportation potential.  Also, please visit and “Like” the “Adirondack Scenic Railroad” and “Next Stop Tupper Lake” on FaceBook. Please pass this information on to any of your Railfan friends we appreciate your support.

Hello, your post for help was posted in 2012. As far as I have heard they are still fighting for their existence. NYState must purely hate rails.
