Title: Your favorite photograph?
Post by RobR on Mar 25th, 2002, 5:04pm
Greetings!

Here's something to get the ball rolling a bit:  Show us your favorite of the railroad photographs you have taken!

Until we get the ability to post photos here, we'll have to just put up links to them.  Here's one of my better ones:

http://clevelandrails.railfan.net/Photos/WLE/wle2679.htm

I've got some more railroad photos along with some stranger work at http://clevelandrails.railfan.net .

I'm afraid your URLs to the individual pictures didn't work out.  When I clicked on them, I got redirected to a mostly empty page at http://leesome1226.tripod.com/adm/interstitial/remote.jpg .

Ya know, I've shot slides for the better part of 10 years... all the best stuff is on them.  I can scan them, kinda, but it's a pain...  and I have all sorts of stuff.  Probably my favorite was when I caught WAHJ-14 around Sept. 1992 putting a train together in the yard at Himrod Jct (long since to Finger Lakes)... I went to the first crossing south of the yard and when they pulled out with a long cut I shot the headend over the crossing... tree-lined, narrow road with only about a third of the GP40-2 visible.  With an old (1950's) Kodak all manual job and K64 film, too.   If I remember right I chased him to Watkins Glen, came back up the other side of the lake, and made it back to Geneva in time to chase WAGY-12 to Auburn, totally unplanned.   Course that's also the same train we chased another time where I ran over something in the yard, noticed the tire leaking badly at the second grade crossing, changed it (no Nascar pit stop there), and STILL beat him to the Glen - by a good half hour!

I can add an image I really like... this is November 1995 at Phelps on the Canandaigua Secondary, WAGY-12 with Conrail 1955 and a few cars.   Finger Lakes is still a few weeks or so off -

Here's one that I'm happy with from down here in SJ.

Although it's not my absolute FAVORITE, it's one of the best prints I have from my website (shoot slides as priority, but don't have a slide scanner).

It's NS Dash 9 8941 entering the yard limits at Paulsboro, NJ in October, 2001. Take care everyone.

:) Here's one of my favorites from a time when the Monongahelia was an independent railroad. A time when it was owned but not controlled by CR and CSX. A time when it was fun to go down and see friends and the trains they operated on a railroad that was above all FRIENDLY.
The photo was taken at Mather, Pa 6/15/90. A few short months and the MGA would be just another part of Conrail :'(

I don't know if I could ever pick just one photo as a favorite.  If it is one I feel particular satisfaction or an sense of accomplishment from, it could make a "favorites list."

This one has something more than the usual factors going for it because it was taken with my new camera, which I have had for less than two weeks.

http://images.fotki.com/v3/photos/4/41513/85050/MNGen231-vi.jpg

The camera is a Nikon Coolpix 995.  I used the "fine" setting and manual mode so I could set it to shutter priority.  I set the shutter at 1/125 sec.

Hi All,
I have a somewhat different answer to that question. My favorite photograph is the one I have't shot yet. I continually search for a photo that is better than the last one that I thought was great.

In railroad photography, being able to take your time and pose, and compose, a picture really is a luxury. Most of the time I wander around the tracks, yards, etc. with the camera ready to shoot at a second's notice. I will shoot first and check the technicalities later on. One can still play around in the darkroom or lab.

Title: Re: Your favorite photograph?
Post by Two23 on Sep 6th, 2002, 3:27pm
Nice angle on this one.  A polarizer would have deepened the colors on the engine and would be a nice complement to your "plan in advance" style of shooting.

Here's mine. I don't have a fancy camera or anything. This was taken with a regular little Cannon sure shot 35mm camera. Still looks great, though!

Title: Re: Your favorite photograph?

Hi Young etc.

Excellent shot. Looks like you took my advice, shoot first and worry about the technicalities later. That sky looks like a movie set from "Gone with the Wind".

Okay, okay, you twisted my arm. Here is one of my favorites, only because AEM-7 #941 is my favorite AEM-7, and only because I am acquainted with Lou Roger, the Engineman of that locomotive. Not many can be as cool as he is while tooling along the NEC at 130 mph. You ever have a conversation with someone, about politics, as an example, while the guy you are talking to is driving at 130 mph? That is cool.

Expoacher -
Thanks.

As far as equipment goes, I'm VERY low tech.  Canon Elf. Kodak APS 400 film.

For years I had a sort of camera jinx.  Something always seemed to go wrong.  The film would jam, I'd choose the wrong aperture, wrong shutter speed, the prints would come out overexposed, underexposed, something.  Had a Nikon FE years ago but couldn't do a thing with it (except pawn it).

I gave up railfanning in '79 (when I was 17), and called it quits on photography altogether some time in the mid '80s -- just began to photo two years ago and to railfan a year ago.

Decided to go with something "Charlie-proof" this time. The Elf has some obvious limitations, but if I keep the sun to my back it takes some good pix.  Also, because the Elf is pocket-sized, I've been able to get access to some not-so-railfan-friendly locations, snap a few quick pix, and get out unnoticed.

Might get an SLR again soon, but right now flat broke.

-Charlie

Taken with a Nikon Coolpix 5000 digital camera on manual exposure (I refuse to use the automatic exposure in any camera ever again, messed me up too many times).  Enjoy.

I have several favorites but narrowing it down to two it would be one from thirteen years ago in West Virginia and another from here in North Carolina taken recently. These appear on those respective boards as well.

This first one was with a no frill 35mm camera taken while boarding an excursion train from Huntington, WV to Parkersburg, WV. The 1990 New River Train was running concurrently and this was a "snap and see" shot of the NKP #765 in between runs in the morning twilight.

I like that you took this one on the shadow side of the train.  If you had been on the other side, the snow would have been blown out white and the sky would also have been overexposed.  Over on this side, the light range is within the capability of the film and it still looks cold and wintery!

What the heck is that big white column in the background--the CN Tower?  No wait, that's a UP loco.  That puts it in the Midwest somewhere.  Ah, I've been there!  The St. Louis Arch, looking towards the northeast?  I have a photo of a blimp framed by it.

This is my favorite: may be not for the country side around the tracks, but because of the lucky moment!
In this place (Biaschina, Gotthard pass, Switzerland, Europe) the RR line make two helix to gain haltitude (haltitude is written with "H" ??? ?) so you can see the same rails for three times on the same hill.....something similar to Tehachapi!
But in this case there were one train uphill and two downhill....and in the right moment they are all visible togehter;D ;D ;D!!!!
This picture is not so good in quality bacause is from a video....but better than nothing! (You should see the video....1000 times better)

Yes, that style of VIA engine only pulls passenger trains. Those cars are specific to the Ontario corridor, aren't they? Out east, we've only got the very normal-looking cross-country coaches.

Oh hey, ICE...what is that big green train 2nd from the left in your signature? Whne I was in Ottawa, rambling round to different parts of town, I ended up in the town of Fallowfield to the south of the city...and I saw that train pull into the Fallowfield station. I'd never seen it before...is it a new train or does it just serve a certain line or what?

Hey guys,

The photograph I showed up there is of a VIA Rail EMD F40PH pulling LRC cars from Montreal to Ottawa. I believe those cars are used only in Ontario and Quebec, along with the new Renaissance Cars.

The locomotive in my signature is a VIA Rail GE P42DC. It's not exactly brand new, but definitely the newest of all VIA locomotives.

To see more pictures of both types of locomotives go here:

Is that the state capitol dome in the background?  It's a nice touch.  There was an old song called, "The Freight Train Wreck at Altoona," that was recorded by one of the earliest "country" singers, Vernon Dalhart, in 1925 I think.  I've been trying to get a copy to listen to.

Yeah, I think it is!  LOL.  I've never been to Pennsylvania.  Building does look a bit small now that I've looked again.  My guess is it's a county courthouse.  Most of thsoe got pretty ornate!

Kent--- Your confusion is understandable--- The dome on the building in the Altoona picture and the dome on the Penna. State Capitol building in Harrisburg have a very similar appearance, though the State Capitol dome is larger.

That is an awesome pic.  That is the CSX River Sub, on the Hudson River's west side.  The train has just passed under the Bear Mountain Bridge, and is crossing over the Pentolopen (spell?) bridge, heading north to Selkirk.  The area offers many good photo opportunities, including Iona Island.  The pic was probably taken from Rt 9w.

One Pentelopen = five Popolopen.

It's over the Popolopen Creek, just south of Fort Montgomery.

A bit of trivia: the Bear Mountain Bridge was originally proposed as a railroad bridge, one of several projected in the Hudson Highlands in the 1870's and 1880's (Poughkeepsie was the only one actually completed).

The footings under the Bear Mountain Bridge towers were actually poured for the railroad bridge; it was completed as a highway bridge in 1924.

And covers a much greater multitude of sins. The dome in Altoona is the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, of the Altoona-Johnstown diocese. Among other contributions, its loudspeakers add recorded hymns on bells to the mix of train horns, thundering slack action, screaming dynamic brakes, and police/fire sirens to ensure that Altoonians don't get lazy and sleep past 6 on Sunday mornings. :) - Bob

Those shots are real beauties.   The scenery is a rare treat.  The pics look a bit surreal, like a postcard or something.  I've had so so luck with images on a flatbed scanner.  Your best bet would be to try to spruce them up with Adobe Photoshop.  I haven't used my scanner in a while so maybe someone else more familiar can help you.  Again, nice pics, love the rock cuts!

You can put the scanned files through a photo program like Adobe photoshop and adjust color, contrast and sharpen them up a bit. It doesn't have to be Adobe a lot of programs have those capabilities

If you want, I can see what I can do with one of the shots in Photoshop and repost it as an example for you.  I've been considering maybe doing a mini-series here showing step by step how to do some of the simple things I've learned so far, if there is interest in that.  (I don't have it mastered by any means!)  I would probably pick the shot of the train going through the cut.  It is a great shot!

Hey thanks for the compliments! I used to have family in Jasper, so every few years we would take a VIA train up there. It was always so exciting for us because we live on Vancouver Island and we're not used to mainline railfanning. That rock cut was a favorite spot of mine, it involved a pretty good hike to get there, but it was definetly worth it! One day while I was sitting there waiting for a train, a black bear appeared not too far from me, I think that was the fastest I ever ran :)
Two23: that would be great if you could touch up that picture, I have photoshop as well, but I just started scanning pics on Monday, and trying to figure stuff out as I go along. The camera I took those pictures with was a $25 Kodak model, so the pics arent the sharpest to begin with (I wish I had my digi cam back then!).
Thanks again guys, and I hope to learn alot!  :)

Vic--

Here's what I came up with after about 2 minutes of fiddling.  It is oversharpened a bit but even that could be fixed if I went back.  I cropped just a little, off the top.  Gray featureless skies generally detract from an image and dilute the impact of the main subject, IMO.

This one is a personal favorite.

Tam and I met up with Jon and Carrie in Berea late on a February Sunday
afternoon in 2002 for some trains and chatter at the depot restaurant.

I managed to get one usable CSX shot before the light was totally gone. I
still had to edit out some lens flare, but the result wasn't too shabby. Not
bad for a 1/8 sec action shot exposure. It was the last shot of the day for
me, not because of the light, but because the cold killed the battery and the
spare was dead too :(

AC44's 314 and 248 lead loaded coal train V806-06 off the Indianapolis Line
(Big Four) onto the Short Line (CSL) at CP 22 in Berea under quickly
fading light.

V806 ran coal from Elk Run, WV to the Levett Generating Station at Tomkins
Cove, NY.

AC44's 409 and 411 handled the train from Elk Run to Russell, KY where they
then picked up N914-09 for Grand Rapids, MI and the 314 and 248 took over on
V806-06.

I was lucky in that I caught a railfan-friendly R40 train on the left, which is not normally used on that route so early in the morning 8)

As poor as it is, I guess this is one of my favorites... This is from the early 80's on the EJ&E near my old house in IL when I was a kid. The trains only came by back then, maybe once every three days, and usually late at night. So it was a big event to see one in the day. Those were simple times back then.

Vicguy --- The photos you posted from Jasper and Kamloops in 1997 are outstanding!  Very well chosen sites with great looking trains --- nothing less than perfection.

It seems that the color and resolution of most all images posted on the Internet will unavoidably be degraded, to a certain extent.  The results can vary widely from website to website, mostly related to the limitations set on the image file size.

I'd eventually like to see some type of standard established throughout the Interenet for posting photos to help improve the image quality. When it's possible, I'll try different settings on compression in the JPEG format and that seems to help in some cases. Usually somewhere around 50% compression seems to work best.

Hopefully, other members may be able to pass along the various methods they use for image posting.

Thanks,

Chuck

US Navy Railroad Pomonkey (Charles County) MD, June 2, 2003.
A recently delivered US Army SW unit from the Aberdeen (MD) Proving Grounds is being towed from White Plains, and a connection with CSX, to the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head. To the best of my knowledge this was the last movement on this rarely used line, which is currently being threatened with abandonment and conversion to a hiking/biking trail.

Here's UP no 4848. i took dis at my fav chillin spot out in Painesville. its one of my fav shots. i got to talk to a CSX track worker and a Painesville cop that day. found out a few months ago a woman got her Ford Escort whacked by an East bound intermodal drag. knocked her car 280ft from the crossing. cop said she basically tried to drive down the tracks. he doesnt know why. i found a few car parts scattered down the line. even ran into the face of the car radio and the car's operation's manuel. anybody notice the tornado siren in the background?

I was lucky enough to be in just the right place, at just the right moment, with the camera at the ready in Durango, CO in 2002 when I captured this shot. The crew was moving K-36 #478 around the back of the yard right past caboose 0540 and a solo box car. It looks like a time piece that could have been any time over the last century. I love this shot, and my wife has promised to draw it as one of her pen and ink art pieces.

Enjoy!

Hi All,

Usually my favorite photograph is the one of the steamer that I have seen last, or better yet, got into its cab.
This is my favorite Prairie, 2-6-2, # 2 Ventura County RR, still active at the Orange Empire RR Museum, Perris, CA.

Enjoy

This is probably my fav that I have taken. It is of the East Broad Top #15 (narrow guage) being studied by a young railfan while the excursion picniced at Colgate Grove before returnung to Rockhill Furnace, PA. The sun was too bright, but I still like it for the esthetic qualities.

***Note*** After placing this photo on railfan.net, I decided to place on RP.net again, and it finally got accepted. I must have tweaked something right this time. :D
RP photo uploaded in place of original.

I have at least three railroad pictures I liked but one is in the railroad meusium in Machester Shortsville, NY, one I need a scanner to put on here, and another that I can.
The one in the Meusium in Shortsville NY is the Steamtown
Big- Boy  going over the Route 21 Overpass on it's way to the original site of the Steamtown meusium,  The other  photo I like that needs a scanner to put on here is from Steamtown in Scrannton PA.
It shows a 0-4-0 tank next two the Big-Boy and it looks like a tonka toy.
The last one is the NYCRR budd-car with a jet engine on it being tested in Ohio.

February of 2007, I had a chance to travel out to the North side of the Great Salt Lake and shoot the Union Pacific along the famous Lucin Cutoff.  Here at the end of the road, where the right-of-way strikes out across the lake, you can see for miles and miles.  UP 6493 is on the point as it takes a freight westbound towards Nevada and on to California.  It's single track atop the causeway, that's continually under assault from wind, water and heavy salt.  The tracks attest to the rust that builds so fast.

I love this shot for it shows how weather and the environment can dramatically effect railroading, and the drama of distance across which trains must work.

Hello,

A tough question!  I guess it includes other photos than one's own.  For now I'll narrow it down to my pics.

I don't know for sure if this is my favorite, but it seems to be everyone else's.  :)  I hope the link works.

This is a great shot, the bell in the engines nose is a dead give away to it's C&NW heritage.

This is most likely my favorite shot, taken from Klondike, CA in Oct. 2009. BNSF 5354 is pushing hard on the back of BNSF 4748 west in the late afternoon sun.
