This was the orginal photo.  RP said "Composition/Balance: The composition of this photo is poor relating to the overall balance of the image"   What the heck dose this mean.

This photo is much better to my eye than the first one.  The first one is badly washed out, and the low angle cuts off the crewmen's feet.  With this higher angle, the rails add to the picture, and the contrast is much better.

I don't understand the shadows either, but I think it's leaning a little left and the crop is too tight for my taste.  I like to see where a train is.  Otherwise, it's just a roster shot, which I'm not a fan of.

Distracting Shadows........ Huh?

The whole nose is pretty much shadowed.  As Rob said above, not sure whether about this shot or not, if you would have been backed away a bit, AND that glint would have stretched back the LH, my mouth would be watering for this one.

Edit:  I guess it was the CSX 300 shot that Rob was talking about.  I agree.  I feel like the loco is trying to smell my breath.  In your face shots can be pulled off, but what I have seen were more than pretty much just really close up wedgies.  I have been unsuccessful with smelling your breath close shots so far too, but do a search for 'nose' on RP and see what comes up.  You will get a wide variety, but will see what I mean in 2 or 3 pages.

As far as the common power, which shot are you talking about?  I believe the whole rejection says something like 'Cloudy day common power...' meaning a typical wedgie of an AC4400 has to be near perfect with lighting, etc.

I like the one with the guy in it.  Just something about the colors/lighting.  Maybe try using different 'filters' in your editor.  All of the colors in the shot are kind of blah, which makes me think that it is a white balance issue.

They actually have never said that. When they have said is they don't generally accept clouday shots of common power. There is a difference there. I'd imagine that if you went to the front page at any given time every day, you would find more than a few shots of common power. Otherwise, there wouldn't be more than 200,000 shots on that ite.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm going to try this one, but I know it'll be rejected too. Oh well. Doesn't hurt to try.

In my opinion, exposure on that was just about perfect.  I think it's got too much sky, though.  You could try cropping out at least half of the sky and resubmitting it.

Reason(s) for Rejection:
- Poor Esthetic Quality: This rejection reason means that the photo is of low esthetic qualities, or is simply not the type of material we are wishing to publish.

New rejection.

Reason(s) for Rejection:
- Bad Cropping: Most often this means that the composition of the photo is poor as it relates the cropping of the image.
