Newfoundland Railroad Passenger Equipment

I was discussing the Port-Aux-Basques operation with some other railroad fans and was relating, from what I remember, that they lifted the standard gauge freight cars off of the standard gauge trucks and lowered the cars onto narrow gauge trucks. This was for the cars coming over from the mainland via boats. I was twelve or thirteen at the time and I don't recall all of the details now. Anyway I was wondering were the passenger cars (heavyweights) that I rode on were standard sized and placed on narrow gauge trucks or were they built as narrow gauge cars. I don't recall that the sectional sleepers we were in were narrower than a standard car, but that was almost 50 years ago.

I hope someone on this board knows the answer as I have no idea where to look to find this info out.

Thanks!

Hi, Capitollimited,

I managed to locate a couple of YouTube videos that may prove helpful:

It would seem that they handled standard-gauge freight equipment off the mainland, by swapping running gear at dockside, but nearly all the locomotives, and the passenger equipment, were narrow-gauge and never left The Rock.  (Maybe a CN historical society somewhere even has links to floorplans?)

Hope this helps,

Norm

Thank you for the links. I was only 12 or 13 at the time but the pictures remind me of the trip. Also the passenger car list was very interesting.

Here's another link I discovered, just this morning.  It's a 22-minute clip, that was apparently an episode of a CBC series titled "Land and Sea."  This means it was professionally produced to broadcasting standards.  I haven't watched it all yet, but from what I have seen, it's very well done.
