Interesting development and the use of a Cat 4 stroke motor to meet the Tier IV 2015 deadline.

After an absence of 12 years, Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. (a subsidiary of the Progress Rail Services Corp. division of Caterpillar Inc.’s Rail Division) has re-entered the passenger locomotive market.
 
 
EMD on May 31 signed an agreement with the Southern California Regional Rail Authority to supply up to 20 new-design EMD F125 low-emission Spirit series diesel-electric passenger locomotives for operation on Metrolink, the regional passenger rail service provider in Southern California. Metrolink is the first passenger railroad to purchase new locomotives designed to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 emissions standards. Delivery will begin in 2015.
 
The agreement is an affirmation of EMD's determination to re-enter the passenger rail market, which it stressed during the American Public Transportation Association's annual meeting in November 2011 in New Orleans.
 
Generating 4,700 hp, the F125 Spirit is compliant with the PRIIA (Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act) 305-005 Next Generation Locomotive specifications, “and meets or exceeds all of Metrolink’s requirements for procuring highly reliable, fuel-efficient locomotives for passenger rail service,” EMD says. “The Spirit is capable of operating at speeds of up to 125 mph, enabling it to satisfy potential increased speed requirements. In addition, the locomotives reduce emissions over Metrolink’s current Tier 0 fleet by more than 85%, per EPA’s Tier 4 emissions standards for new diesel locomotives.”
 
The F125 Spirit consists of a streamlined Vossloh Rail Vehicles (VRV)-designed monocoque carbody with one control cab equipped with CEM (Crash Energy Management); a turbocharged, 20-cyclinder; four-stroke Cat® C-175 20 diesel engine; an AC traction propulsion system; VRV high-speed trucks; inverter-controlled HEP (head end power), “and all the accessories necessary for single- and multiple-unit operation suitable for commuter and intercity service.”
 
The F125 Spirit includes an SCR (selective catalytic reduction)-only after-treatment system to meet Tier 4 emissions standards. Equipped with an electronic fuel injection system, its Cat® C175 series diesel engine “provides exceptional train acceleration advantages, compared to other less powerful locomotive products or older technologies, while maintaining Tier 4 emissions performance,” EMD notes. “This locomotive addresses Metrolink’s future performance needs and anticipated ridership growth. The fuel-efficient locomotive will be used with Metrolink’s new Rotem Bi-Level passenger cars—also equipped with CEM—which will yield one of the highest levels of commuter rail passenger safety, crew safety, and passenger comfort in the country.”
 
EMD plans to assemble the locomotives at its Muncie facility in Indiana.

We are proud to say we are back, and excited to be on the forefront of passenger rail technology From EMD’s first record-setting Zephyr, topping 112 mph in 1934, to our latest F125 Spirit capable of speeds up to 125 mph, we will rely on the combined strengths of Caterpillar’s Rail Division including EMD and Progress Rail to mark a new era of progress in the passenger rail market.”
 
”We are very excited to have reached this critical milestone upgrade in our locomotive fleet with the latest state-of-the-art low emission technology,” said Metrolink CEO Mike DePallo. “Metrolink has consistently stayed on the front end of trends as it relates to both environmental and safety technologies, and we are proud to state that this acquisition of Tier 4 locomotives puts us in a leadership position among commuter rail systems across the country when it comes to sustainable operations.”
 
Caterpillar, Progress Rail, and EMD say they “have taken an enterprise approach to identify the optimal technology that can be applied to locomotives to achieve Tier 4 emissions standards. With the companies’ experience as a worldwide leader in locomotive technologies, EMD will offer Metrolink innovative solutions benefiting fleet performance and satisfying the need for increased capacity. Caterpillar, Progress Rail, and EMD are the only OEMs to have designed and sold new locomotives designed to meet Tier 4.”
 
As part of the Spirit locomotive procurement and its commitment to clean air, Metrolink will donate up to five EMD F59PH locomotives for alternative fuels research and development programs “in hopes of realizing emissions-free commuter rail operations in the future.” The F59PH and its sister F59PHI were EMD’s final passenger locomotives before it exited the passenger rail market in 2001. The F59PH debuted in 1988; 83 units were built. The F59PHI debuted in 1994; 99 units were built.

It will be interesting to see just how these locomotives will look once they start releasing them.  The stylized drawing presented with the announcement may be some indication as to what it would look like, but there is no guarantee of this...

MPI also has a new locomotive in the works, these to be built for MBTA.  An interesting looking unit but again it is hard to say what the finished product might look like...

Still a viable engine but it may be phased out in favor of the CAT line of engines.

Expect  the 710 (and other two-strokes, at least diesels) will not be seen in new design locomotives, and increasingly will be replaced in new production by 4-stroke Cats. Interesting that the Tier 4 Cats for the new Metrolink engines are only about 50-HP up on the Tier 3 qualified MPI order for Metro North. Which has a GE-sourced V-12 vs the 20 cylinders  in the Cats.
 
May see NG (either CNG or LNG) working out as far as emissions are concerned in converted 2-strokes.
 
The styling on those new Spirit 125s looks a lot like the new electrics, except for not having the depressed top for electrical connections. Including the cat-eye head-lights.
 
Wonder if AMTRAK will buy some?

I agree that the 710 will probably not be used for any Tier 4 mainline operation in the future. The 710 is finding its way into the SD59MX rebuilds and some other rebuild models, but it is the 12 cylinder version in the 3000 to 3200HP rating.  The only EMD locomotive at this time that is close to Tier 4 specifications is the 710 operating is the 9900 rebuild.  It spends a lot of time for maintenance in the shop.  
It uses two sets cleaning type cans for each cylinder.

That excressence(sic) in the middle of the roof, is that the exhaust-cleaning gear?

Yup... that's the scrubber.  Strange that other units have a lot smaller one.
