Great, and much appreciated commentary. As noted above, the thinking of Ed Ellis vital. He was the who was charged with doing it.

I get the nagging feeling he was on a "planned to fail" mission? Suicide duty? I have run my share of time critical cargo with junk equipment.
It gets there on time by sheer strength of will, and have all the guys thinking "team".

A flaw with the "host carrier" scheme being? The impacted Unions did not want (still don't) its work "scabbed out" to AMTK. What the latter
wished to do on its "own track" a separate issue...

The operating concept is ever less fashionable in current milieu?

Binghamton, NY (E-L), 1962.

This is a rare and interesing photo; note UP mail (baggage?) car behind trailing "A" unit.

Another item of interest is the ex-DL&W "Boonton" coach at left; as commuter coaches out of Hoboken, they seldom ventured far from "home" territory........

So, we may guess the Car loaded Jersey City "pure" from LAX, SFO or North Platte, NE? Few would unload it enroute, just to save "off line" issues...

Vern.....

Jersey City?

I think you mean Hoboken!<G>

Up until now, the only UP-passenger equipment I've heard carried in E-L consists were "AMERICAN"-series sleepers, during the early E-L years.

One such train was the "PACIFIC EXPRESS", not only could UP sleepers be found in the consists, but the train was also diagrammed to carry NADX steam- and signal-line equipped TOFC flats, carrying REA trailers and/or containers........

Cresco, PA (E-L), 1962.

Six head-end cars are being carried; any wonder why, when this business disappeared later in the decade, that the E-L wiped the slate clean of all remaing through service?

You say TO-MAYT-OE, I say TO-MAHT-OE, all over again? The superficial fans
didn't pay attention to the head end cars! I say Joisey City, you say Hoboken?

You gotta' UP at track side, yes?

Aaaahhh, life as it SHOULD be......a charming slice of "Paul Harvey's America"!<G> (Binghamton, NY, 1962)

Heavy head-end loading here....note, too, what appears to be another UP* car; also, vintage REA trucks........

*Any info on the particulars of a UP head-end car on an E-L passenger train (routings, etc.) would be most appreciatied.......

Let me see if I appreciate this? So the possibly insane crowd in DC, all bent on being Fools On The Hill decided. In this case,
a National Rail Passenger Network to be established with the last two or three cars on existing schedules of the time?

WHOA! I didn't take that Graduate Seminar!

Dearborn Station, 1965.

The numerous head-end cars seen here remind us of the importance of such business, several decades ago.......
