Though not a sleeper or diner, this historic "shorty" SF business car deserves mention here......

http://www.txtransportationmuseum.org/collection-santa-fe-404.php

Walthers used to catalog an HO model (kit, not R-T-R) of one fo these - I built one years ago, very neat cars, would be nice to own one and be able to run it. or at least just have it for a "Man Cave".... Closest i will come is have it hooked on the back of a train on my layout.

In late April 1966 I rode the Texas Chief from Dallas to Chicago (Dallas section existed then, joined the main train from Houston at Gainesville). Occuppied a roomette in a Pine-series 10-6, and had to pay the difference between a lower and a roomette space charge (traveling on a government TR and all Uncle would spring for was a lower berth, even though there weren't any). A comfortable way to travel. Dinner and breakfast in the diner, typical Fred Harvey quality, I ate well.  IIRC, it was French Toast for breatfast and it was good.

In 1975, took AMTRAK Lone Star from Temple to Chicago. Once again on Uncle's dime. Had to pay the transportation for my wife, and we had a bedroom, in another Pine-series 10-6, ex-Santa Fe, from Budd. Ugly AMTRAK interior refurb *rthyat purple and blue carpeting on the floor and some wall surfaces - argh!!), but everything worked and it was a good ride. Diner was a 1943 Budd (looked it up, disocvered it and your correspondent were the same age) 36-seater, acquired from Santa Fe. Train crew was mostly ex-Santa Fe as were the cars. Food was pretty well up to the old days. We both decided on the French Toast, eaten as we arrived at Fort Mdison for the Mississippi River crossing IIRC.

Last Santa Fe sleeper and diner was also post-AMTRAK. El Paso to Houston, in one of the ex-Santa Fe 11-DBR cars, assigned to the Sunset at that point (1982 or '83). It was one of the 24-duplex roomette cars rebuilt to 11-DBR for the Super Chief in 1955 (I think 1955). Pullman Standard instead of Budd origin, like almost all Super Chief sleepers other than those for the initial streamliner back in '37. Diner was again an ex-Santa Fe 36-seat Budd.  Food was adequate, but not up to what I recall from the earlier trips. Can't recall what we ate, but seems like it wasn't French toast - omlettes perhaps?

Heavyweight Pullman/lounge-observation "COMMANDANT"; though this car was assigned to the SP for many years, in 1914, 10 similiar cars (built to Plan No.2521A) were built for the SF (one of these cars was the "SAN DIEGO")..........
