Interesting page (w/YouTube vids) on restored HW Pullman "BISON PEAK".

During the Korean War, the SF purchased a number of surplus Pullmans (including this car), and converted them in coaches.

It was not retired from work service until 1990........

Though not a sleeper or diner, this historic "shorty" SF business car deserves mention here......

Joliet, 1972 (caption included)......

http://gelwood.railfan.net/atsf/atsf-d1378jpa.jpg

Wow, Mr. Malone, this thread should be good . . .

This photo again illustrates how captions can sometimes be misleading.  I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the date and location-- Joliet, Illinois in June, 1972.  Joliet was the first stop out of Chicago for Santa Fe's long-distance trains.

But the car in question, Picuris, was/is a Club Lounge Car, not a Dining Car.  It was one of a set of six delivered to Santa Fe in late 1937/early 1938 for the streamlining of the Chief.  The date here of June 1972 means that this train, though still lettered for Santa Fe, is actually an Amtrak train.  Probably not the Super Chief/El Capitan, since those trains would have carried a Sleeper or two between the Hi-Level Chair Cars and the Diner & Pleasure-Dome Lounge.  That leaves either the Texas Chief (or Lone Star), or --my hunch-- perhaps the short-lived attempt to revive the Chief as a second daily Chicago-LA service.

Fascinating stuff.

I know, I know, picky-picky-picky . . .

Despite the caption naming this car "Kaidlto", this Sleeper is actually named Kaibito, a luxurious 4 Compartment, 2 Drawing Room, 4 Double Bedroom Sleeper built for the lightweight 1938 Chief.

Rivet-counting, spell-check regards,

Norm

This is a great photo of a rare bird.

The Blue _______ series 10-2-3 Sleepers were built for the 1948 upgrade of the Super Chief.  I think there were 19 cars built, and so far as I know this floorplan was unique to those 19 cars.

A nice find.

Deja vue, surely!

Not five minutes ago, my good friend Vern and I (during a fascinating phone discussion) were voicing our hopes that you'd hop on board this thread, given your vast knowledge and deep affection for the SF!

I told Vern my personal "handle" for you is "Mr. Santa Fe"!<G>

As usual, appreciate your input and trivia......you can always be counted upon to add a great deal of depth to any thread!

"DENEHOTSO" (4DR/1DBR/lounge-obs)......

http://rr-fallenflags.org/atsf/atsf-pul-vc-ava.jpg

http://rr-fallenflags.org/steamtown/pul-unk-ava.jpg

Denehotso (the car shown in these links) was one of the round-end Observation Cars for the 1938 streamlined Chief.  In 1954, they were removed from Chief service, "squared-off," and assigned to the new San Francisco Chief as mid-train Club Lounges.

Two years later, in 1956, these 1937-38 vintage Obs. cars (called Betatahkin-class) were joined by their 1948-vintage sisters, in the Vista _______ - series, which had been removed from the Super Chief and similarly squared off.  I originally believed the second link above showed one of these 1948-vintage Obs. cars, post-surgery-- however, a closer look at the fluting leads me to believe that this second photo is also of Denehotso or one of her sisters.  Note the "smooth area" just blow the roofline, and only two or three rows of fluting above the windows.  This is a hallmark of prewar AT&SF lightweight cars.  For contrast, here is a link to 1948-vintage Vista Canyon, now owned by the Arizona Railway Museum . . .

http://www.azrymuseum.org/roster/Vista_Canyon/Pics/Vista%20Canyon%20Rear.jpg

Both cars are shown squared-off, but all were built as round-end Observations.

Regards,

Norm

This is particulary interesting......so, the "DENEHOTSO" did not have a squared-off obs end "as built"!

Certainly, such a car (with squared obs end) could do "double duty", being able to be placed in mid-train postitions...........
