At one time, NH through trains between New York and Boston handled a number of commuters between New London and Providence to Boston.

This was a scenario where through trains also "doubled" as commuter runs.

Here we see two examples of NH through equipment, Grill Car #955, and coach #8613.......

B&O "through commuter" service......

"......the B&O once operated a commuter service in three directions from Pittsburgh, in both directions on the Main Line and the line to Cincinnati. Through trains played a large part in the service to the growing Pittsburgh suburbia for decades......."

".......a number of B&O through trains stop at certain stations within the Washington DC. suburban territory. the 'NATIONAL LIMITED' was one such train, before being discontinued......."

Excellent and thorough historical page (w/ a number of rare vintage photos) of LIRR parlor car "TUSCARORA CLUB", which started life in 1911 as a LV baggage-club car.

Sadly, this historic car was scrapped just a few years back......

LIRR heavyweight parlor "SYOSSET" (#2004).

Built by Pullman in 1914, as a parlor-buffet; aquired by the NYC in 1942, and converted to a coach-buffet at Beech Grove.

Purchased by the LIRR in the 1950's............

A most interesting background in this photo, which, (according to the caption), was taken at Hoboken in the late 60's.

A string of ex-SF coaches can be seen to the rear; what makes this photo particulary interesting is that there is a dome in the consist.

The more I study this photo, though, the more I'm convinced that there was an error in captioning (so far as location).

If this was Hoboken, then there would be MU catenary visible; IF, indeed this photo WAS taken in New Jersey, this would have been on non-electrified trackage..

Perhaps this photo was taken at Chicago(?)......IMHO, I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment further.....

HFM, I'll concur with your hunch.  Santa Fe may have begun shedding prewar Chair Cars by the time this photo was taken, but in the string of AT&SF cars in the background here, there is not a Chair Car to be seen.  I see a Sleeper, a Pleasure Dome Lounge, a Diner, and another Sleeper.  I'm convinced this is a Super Chief consist, so unless one of these consists ventured east to Hoboken on a fan trip or other "goodwill tour," I'm agreeing that Chicago is a better explanation for this shot.

Regards,

Norm

Norm.....

I am glad to see that you also shared my hunch on this one......after studying this photo a bit more, the more I was convinced that this was NOT Hoboken.

Having ridden the E-L out of Hoboken countless times since my youth, I know this area of ROW quite well, and know that, once out of the terminal, it is a virtual straightaway to the Bergen Tunnels.

Too, the lack of catenary for the Morris & Essex MU's was also further leading me to believe that this picture was not at Hoboken, as the caption stated.

I was leaning more and more to a location outside of Dearborn, and the train in the photo was either the PHOEBE SNOW or the LAKE CITIES.

Also, the clearances of the Bergen Tunnels themselves also made me think twice as to domes making a trip east to Hoboken.

One thing I am sure of, though; with the SF and the E-L sharing Dearborn Station, moving the second-hand SF coaches east to Hoboken certainly would not have required much trouble.

As always, appreciate your input and views.....

"H.F.M."
