Norm......

I just had this strange feeling that you would find the ex-SF cars on the E-L in commuter service interesting......

Though I never got to ride them, I do remember them clearly down at Hoboken.

These sleek, streamlined cars looked quite sharp, especially when bieng pulled by an E-L E8!

As I had mentioned earlier, though these cars certainly must have looked quite modern to E-L commuters (in comparison to the ancient BOONTON and STILLWELL cars they were then riding in) they certainly were far from new; in fact, they were only a few years younger than the newest of the STILLWELL coaches!

So, in some sense, SANTA FE passenger cars DID operate east of Chicago!<G>

Again, greatly appreciate your detailed input.......

Early/mid-70's photo of a CNJ NY&LB consist at the Harrison yards (note PATH third rail on the right).

Here, GP-40 No. 3681 is seen leading a colorful consist of ex-GN and BN through equipment.

Note that the lead car, though still painted in the old GN colors, now sports small CNJ Liberty heralds....

NY&LB train near the South Amboy station, June, 1980.

More streamlined castoffs from other roads make up this train.....

Gentlemen:

Just consulted my copy of Don Wood's "THE UNIQUE NEW YORK AND LONG BRANCH", and found that the second-hand steamlined cars used on the NY&LB came from the SANTA FE, MISSOURI PACIFIC, and the ROCK ISLAND.

As I had mentioned earlier, though the second-hand through cars appealed to commuters bieng newer and air-conditioned, they also created increased dwell times at stations, due to only one door per side per car.....

LIRR's #531 (ex-NYC #3005), built by P-S, 1946-1947.

The LIRR converted this car from 64 plush reclining seats to 106 commuter-style walkover seating.....

There were two unofficial western trains that ran in NJ commuter service. The E-L Capitan with ex-Santa Fe equipment on EL and the Jersey Builder with ex-GN coaches on the CNJ.

E-L Capitan (not a great pic):

As always, it's a pleasure to have you aboard!

Those "Jersey Builders" of the CNJ had to be the most colorful consists ever to operate in NJ commuter service!

Certainly QUITE distinctive!

In "THE ERIE LACKAWANNA STORY", by Paul Carleton, there is a beautiful two-page spread at the beginning, showing E-8 #826 hauling a string of ex-SANTA FE coaches......sure made for a VERY impressive-looking consist!

There are also a number of other photos in this work featuring the SANTA FE cars, being pulled by E-8's, GP-7's, and RS-3's.

A colorful era on the E-L, while it lasted.....

CNJ also had ex-KCS, MoPac and Rock Island (likely the corrugated coach in the one shot) in use.  A few were repainted into CNJ blue with yellow letterboard... links to shots of some of these cars can be found on the page linked to below...

Excellent photo page on LIRR's "APAQUOGUE"; this car was built in 1947 by BUDD as a tavern-lounge-observaion for the FEC ("OKEECHOBEE").

This handsome car was aquired by the LIRR in 1968 for parlor service, and renamed.

A few photos here show ex-KCS equipment as well......

LIRR's heavyweight parlor "TECKAWITHA" (built by Pullman in 1927), was originally PRR's "TRINDLE SPRING".......
