Tom:

Agreed 100%.

Just because a historic rail car is "preserved" does not mean that said vehicle is safe from the ravages of both the harsh elements and mindless, moronic vandals with far too much idle time on their hands.

On the NY&LB, not only to did ex-through line rolling sock operate, but, also, motive power that once hauled through trains.

The NJDOT purchased ten remanufacured E8's from ICG, and additional E's from the SOUTHERN, which ran with their original CRESCENT markings.

This 1980 photo at Morgan shows a double-headed NY&LB train, with an ex-SOUTHERN unit trailing.

Consist is of secondhand through cars.....

South Amboy, 1982.

This was the point where ex-PRR/PC trains swapped their GG-1's for steam/diesel power.

Note the E units wearing schemes from NJT, NJDOT, and SOUTHERN.

A GG-1 can be seen on the left.

Classic scenes like this are now history......

Still wearing her old CRESCENT markings, #4330 is seen here leading a NY&LB train near Middletown, looking mighty fine indeed...........

Another view of #4330; note here that, while still wearing SOUTHERN paint, she has since lost her old insignias.....

The old Southern green and white and gold loooked very good, whether on cab or hood units. When i was at the JAG School in Charlottesville in 1974, there was usually a GP-9  (or other hood unit, but usually a GP-7 or -9 IIRC) sitting on a stub track on the north side of the depot. Very handsome in that green and white and gld and high short hood (and yes - i know engineers don't like high short hoods, or running loing-hood forward. So several have told me).

Clyde:

I first encountered the ex-SOUTHERN E's at Hoboken, around 1984/85.

These units were still in full SOUTHERN Crescent regalia, and were parked near the old repair shop, near track #17 (this now longer exists, as the HBLR saion now occupies the site)

I snapped a few pics, and vowed to ride behind one of these handsome machines, one day soon.

Sadly, I never got around to doing so......

Like the second-hand coaches they hauled on the NY&LB, the E60's were cast-offs from through service.

Like the GG-1's they replaced, they hauled NY&LB trains between New York and South Amboy, where diesels took over for the remainder of the trip to Bay Head.

Here we see #961 at South Amboy, lettered for NJT, but still wearing AMTRAK colors......
