Like "PENN STATION" in New York, "LA SALLE STREET STATION" is only a name today.

This cavernous, historic edifice, until late 1967, was the western terminus for the world-famous "20TH CENTURY LIMITED"; in October of the following year, the last PENN-CENTRAL train departed, with the railroad moving remaining trains over to Union Station.

The ROCK ISLAND was the last to use the venerable old depot, which, of course, no longer exists today.

Let us pay homage to this great depot and the steel-wheeled thoroughb reds that once called there.....

Until the arrival of the new push-pull equipment, the ROCK ISLAND used two "Baby" FM Trainmasters (w/Lowey styling) in commuter service out of La Salle.

In their later years, they were re-engined by EMD.

After the arrival of the new push-pulls, these two engines were rewtired from passenger service......

Into the E-L era, through NKP cars operated between Chicago and Hoboken, via Buffalo.

After arrival at the DL&W depot at Buffalo, NKP cars were tacked onto a DL&W/E-L train for the remainder of the trip into Hoboken.

Pictured here is the "CITY OF CLEVELAND", an NKP (P-S) 5DBR-Lounge.....

Excellent photo page of nostalgic 1960's ROCK ISLAND passenger operations; be sure to check out photos of the joint ROCK ISLAND-ESPEE "GOLDEN STATE LIMITED-SUNSET LIMITED", between Chicago (LA SALLE), and El Paso, and New Orleans-Los Angeles.

Also, the photos of the "CORN BELT ROCKET" depicts a truly classic 1960's "mixed" train, with coaches, express/head end cars, and TOFC's.

There are also several photos from 1983 of the old La Salle platforms, after the main station building had been demolished.
