Re: NYS&W GTL (Guess The Location) Game - By Thinkin Lincoln on 05/10/16 at 13:43:14 - 'NYSW-4.jpg' 106 KB
An ex-D&H engine, in a town formerly occupied by the D&H, but seen here on ex-Erie trackage, wearing NYS&W paint....

Coal was the reason this town existed, but not because it was mined here......The gravity of this classic photo from 1984 (yes, 1984 is now considered "classic"!) is very impressive, and the ups and downs of this branch have been well documented.

Can you GTL from those clues alone?

Here's a vintage view I found that looks east from where the highway would later be located, and what I suspect is an earlier station building.

Re: NYS&W GTL (Guess The Location) Game - By Thinkin Lincoln on 05/06/16 at 13:10:28 - 'images.jpg' 17 KB
Indeed, NEFAN, Beaver Lake NJ, coming eastbound under the Rt. 23 bridge.

"Back in the day", Beaver Lake (then known as Snufftown), was a mjor point on the NJ Midland, and the later NYS&W, especially when Middletown, NY traffic and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre traffic was running heavy. I don't particularly remember the station, except for where it sat, at the base of the bridge, just like at Franklin on the L&H.

Re: NYS&W GTL (Guess The Location) Game - By Thinkin Lincoln on 05/05/16 at 08:53:37 - 'NYSW-3.jpg' 111 KB
OK, next one....A little more obscure, and back on "home" NYS&W rails......

In the 1990's, I spent a lot of time chasing stack trains from Port Jervis to Little Ferry (and everywhere in between), and this location was no exception. Once also a junction, this location sat almost at the apex of a ruling grade in both directions, and once was an important yard and shop location in the days of large coal trains. The NYS&W was very nice to build a good part of it's route within very close proximity of the road seen in the background, which made (and still) makes railfaning very easy.

Time for everyone to get up to snuff and GTL................

You are of course correct, sir!

That's neat! Did he teach you guys a lot of Sabbath and Rainbow tunes? LOL!

NYS&W GTL (Guess The Location) Game - By Thinkin Lincoln on 05/04/16 at 13:34:06 - 'NYSW-2.jpg' 120 KB
Greetings, Suzie-Q fans!

I should think by now that almost all of the RF.net members are familiar with the "Guess The Location" game that we play over in about a two dozen or so forums (and growing!) all over this site, so if you do, that's great (because it's a lot of fun), but if you're not, please allow me to quickly explain............The idea is to post a photo (usually craftily cropped to eliminate an easy guess) and usually with some clues to the history of the location or railroad, and then everybody guesses away till somebody gets it. The only other rule is to post one photo at a time, and no new photos until the previous one is guessed correctly, so as not to clutter up the thread with too many "GTL's" going on at one time. So, does this sound like fun, or what?

So I'd like to begin with this easy one from one of my "hometown" railroads that I grew up with.......

As we all know (or maybe not), the modern NYS&W has grown beyond it's New Jersey and Pennsylvania roots since the DO takeover. This photo is one such location on the "expanded" NYS&W.......This location, named for a New York State Lieutenant Governor, is also considered the closest incorporated city in the center of the state. Once home to two branches of two different major NYS railroads, now it only has one. And as a music fan, I was happy to learn that the city named a street after a famous rock vocalist who died about 6 years ago.

So, put on your thinking caps, and get ready to G-T-L!

NYSW's SD70's... - By CG_Tower on 06/03/07 at 19:56:25 - 'PICT0086small.jpg' 82 KB
I posted this in the Indiana & Ohio forum, but I thought I'd post this here too. Just a note to say they are alive and well...at least the 4050. Here we see her being turned on the wye at Lima to lead #400 south on this gray Sunday. The crew commented that the A.C. still works!

Re: NYS&W - Limecrest - By njvike on 07/17/06 at 15:32:20 - 'signals.jpg' 106 KB
Wen these pictures were taken, the gates were not up and the signals were not activated yet. I drove by on Sunday and now see the gates are there and the signals no longer have those blinders on

[12]

Re: NYS&W - Limecrest - By njvike on 07/17/06 at 15:29:43 - 'movement.jpg' 156 KB
Watching the crew switch cars around while pissing-off some people trying to get by. This was on a Sunday and I have never seen this road used at all.

Looking at the 1800 in action. Wish Limecrest would be getting service but as always, the future of that place is always a mystery

Re: NYS&W - Limecrest - By njvike on 07/17/06 at 15:23:32 - 'mp.jpg' 150 KB
For those of you that haven't been there in over a month, the crossbucks have been removed and signals and gates have been added. I wonder what's up?

NYS&W - Limecrest - By njvike on 07/17/06 at 15:21:39 - 'limecrest.jpg' 163 KB
I must admit that I haven't been following my favorite (existing) railroad as of late. When was this engine acquired?

Back at County Road 519. Some hike but more to go to get to Hainesburg Junction.
The trail from Sparta Jct to Hainesburg Junction is approximately 27 miles. Members of the Paulinskill Valley club do this this in one day

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/29/06 at 19:00:23 - 'abandonedhouse.jpg' 150 KB
Just before getting back to Halsey station, I see this abandoned house. Don't believe it had anything to do with teh NYS&W.

[21]

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/29/06 at 18:57:18 - 'lne2sussex.jpg' 229 KB
The L&NE trail, now belonging to the gas company in the area, is slightly visable from here as it continues north with the NYS&W. The L&NE will cross in Augusta with the EL and back again with the NYS&W near Sussex.

[22]

Here's where the L&NE will soon connect with the NYS&W at Swartswood Junction

[25]

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/29/06 at 18:42:25 - 'tothetop.jpg' 159 KB
Same intersection looking to the top. Very interesting.

[30]

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/29/06 at 18:41:05 - 'tothebottom.jpg' 177 KB
At this intersection there is a path that closely follows the trail of the NYS&W. It's still too close for the L&NE so I'm not sure who owns it.

[31]

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/29/06 at 18:39:04 - 'jc69.jpg' 155 KB

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/29/06 at 18:35:45 - 'notsure.jpg' 72 KB
Not really sure what this is. I don't believe it's the Hight Point State Monument. I will need to take a good set of binoculars next time.

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/18/06 at 12:29:21 - 'rock.jpg' 128 KB
What is interesting though is the work that must have been done to break through this rock formation.

[63]

Re: Hainesburg branch - By njvike on 05/18/06 at 12:28:02 - 'parksign.jpg' 161 KB
There's not much on this part of the trail   Just some ties and nothing more.
