I have been collecting parts and casting for a Pacific for sometime. One issue I had was trying to decide which prototype to model. I am not a rivet counter but at the same time I want this locomotive to look like something that really existed. This created a problem. Because of the parts I had the engine had to have; spoked drivers, alligator crosshead guides, baker valve gear, and a delta trailing truck. Sounds simple enough until you try to find such an animal.  
I could find baker valve gear with hodges or coles  trailing trucks or walshaurt (sp) valve gear with delta trailing trucks. I finally found three I liked:
 
1) Maine Central #270 but this was a light pacific and I really wanted something heftier.
2) Erie K5 which is a really nice engine, but Bob Dean just built a really pretty one so I don't want the obvious comparisons.
 
so then I found #3 the Boston & Albany K6b pacific.

To me it looks like a first generation Hudson but with a 2 wheel trailing truck. The prototype throttle is located in the dome in front of the stack. An interesting feature is the throttle actuator rod goes through the sand dome. I am looking forward to some steaming bay discussions with the "steam experts" on that one.
 
I started months ago, but finally got a butt in gear to start this thread..... Sorry Henry.
 
From the beginning I have been assisted greatly by 2 of the best engine builders I know. Bob Dean and the late Peter Bialecki.  
 
Here is couple photo's of what have collected. A pair of Bob dean water jet cut frames and a set of LE rear cradle and Delta trailing truck.

A set of Roger Goldman Baker valve gear.  
 
The cylinders and valve gear was built up by someone else so the plan is to completely disassemble and reassemble.... correctly.

One of the first thing we had to do was square up the cradle and mount it to the frame.

I picked up the drawing set from the NYCSHS for the K6a & b pacifics. Well worth the investment. The drawing showed the rear cradle should be sort of "stepped down". As was pondering how I could modify it, Bob cuts up the cradle and rewelds it back up in 5 minutes.

Next we turned our attention to squaring up the journal openings. Oh yeah the journal boxes were already finished and a gift from a dear friend.

The problem with starting with pre-made parts is that they sometimes don't match the prototype. Case in point, the frame rails were too short in the front. I addressed this by making a new nose piece from solid steel plate.

After rounding the top a little we welded a flat bar to the front.

I had the parts for a LE front truck but the axles were too close for this prototype. So I scrapped the LE side frames and Bob designed a new set from the original B&A prints and had the water jetted. I did use the rest of the LE heart rockers, swing arms, bolster and center pieces.

After Bob and I got the front truck together and mounted it to the frame we noticed a clearance issue. So Bob took the frames back to the water jet and removed some material to clear the wheel swing. he decided to remove some more material in front of the front driver to create an area to mount the suspension equalization adjuster. We also had to relocate the brake pivot stand to the rear about an inch or so. I haven't got a photo of the finished frame yet but here is what was planned.

These are turned and waiting for the crank pin holes to be bored.
This is the last project Peter was working on. He interrupted work on his Niagara to do these for me. I cannot put it into words right now.

After I got them back from Peter, I spent a week of evenings with a die grinder cleaning up the casting flash. Now they are just waiting on me.
 
That brings the project up do date, I promise I will update this thread as progress is made.

If you need a sand dome for this loco, I have one that might work (aluminum casting).  Right now it's buried in my basement somewhere.

An image google shows that the B&A pacifics with the front end throttle were numbered above 590, and the throttle rods did pass through the sand box.  HTH Bill

Bill, The set of plans I have shows it well. I had to look at them a few times before I was convinced. I never seen another example like that.  
 
I spent a few hours Saturday at Bob Deans. He officially ended my mostly spectator status by giving me a bunch of "homework" and marching orders.  
 
Now to find time between Christmas Pageant rehearsals and other planned functions so I can make some chips.

Hi guys, I just wanted to give a quick status report on this build. I have temporarily "parked" the Pacific project. With the recent passing of Peter B. I have not only lost my friend but my "home track" and equipment storage as well. As a result the 0-6-0 in in the garage occupying the stand the pacific  should be being built.
 
The good news is that with the 0-6-0 home, I can tinker on it at night after work. I am finally able to address some odd quirks and items I have wanted to deal with.

Totally sympathise with your predicament, It must be so hard to get going again until you find a new direction.  The Hudson is too nice a project to be put on hold.
Maybe a long rail ramp and put the 060 under the bench. or another stand behind the mill, with a thick cover to keep the dirt out.
In my last place I had a 10 x 6 shed with a removal wall panel leading to under the bench.

I started tinkering with the Pacific again. I am trying to make parts at home, but I lose incentive quickly in my un-airconditioned Florida garage/shop. It is like a sauna.

I got her on her drivers. I really have too many irons in the fire and this old girl is not getting the attention she deserves. Maybe when we get the track expansion done and the new car barn and the grates for #404 and the new body for Linda's critter and the new reworked body details for the NW2 and..... well you know......

Finally got some time to dedicate to this baby. I am currently focusing on the trailing truck. As with most things, I get focused on the doing and completely forget to take progress photos.

I have been working on the journal boxes as well and I have them about 80% done. I just need to mount the face plates and oiling doors.

I used some h/r flat bar to make the binders. But I don't care for the rounded edge so a little cleaning up was in order.

Viola! These will look a little better I think. I will make some serious progress once the trailing truck wheels are turned and mounted. Unfortunately I lack the machining skills and confidence to attempt that on my own, so I am waiting on when a friend has time to either turn them or at least stand over my shoulder and walk me through it.
