I bought a set of drawings and castings from John.  I started a "Build Log" on "The Home Machinist" BB.   http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=95790

After more than a year without working on the shay, I got the bug back and am now working on it.  I have a good start on the trucks and engine.

Here is a picture of the engine.  It still needs much work, but I do have it running.
Here is a video of the engine running.

You can see the benefits of modeling your idea in 3d cad and letting the cam program "write" the milling machine program which in turn generates a part exactly like the one you drew.
I am using bronze bushings for the steam and water cylinders.

Here is a picture of the steam end of the water pump.  I gave it a little test run on air.
