Here is the B&M switcher I am building (or should I say rebuilding). With the exception of the valve gear(I am not even thinking of changing over to Baker gear), i think it will look pretty good.

I assume from the photo the reamer you used is tapered, If so don't both plates need tapers facing inwards?

Hello popawell.

The tapered reamer is tapered up to the last inch. then it is straight. The holes were reamed to a precise 5/8 diameter the entire depth of the hole.

The bores in flue sheets, front and back, have to be exactly straight and smooth. Since the tubes are rolled in (expanded) to seal them. Look at Bobby's pic. the straight smoothness of the bores can very clearly be seen.

Time to bump this thread. I brought the boiler home from the shop so I could drill the stay-bolt holes over the holiday weekend. Here is a few shots I took.

We left the backhead off for now so we can clean out the metal shavings.

Bobby,

Looking great!  Can't wait to see more progress on your rebuild and more importantly, maybe a little coal smoke in say,,,,,,,,,late February?  Keep up the great work.  Oh yeah, hope you and everybody else down south had a Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, I have officially lost my mind (wife's words) and I have set the schedule for the locomotives return to the tracks back indefinitely.......

Since I started this rebuild I had one thought in mind, and that was to not only make it a good steaming and reliable engine. But to follow as closely as possible a favorite prototype. The Boston & Maine G11 0-6-0's however had small frame Baker valve gear and my engine has walsherts........ until now.

I recently scored a nice set of Baker valve gear castings.

You guys won't recognize this engine when I'm done. Let the fun begin!

Congrats Bobby.  Not out of your mind, just a little out of steam right now.  Anyways, looking forward to an expanded thread on not only a boiler rebuild, but now a complete makeover.  Nothing more than locos like than a good ole' spa treatment to make them looking and feeling brand new again.  Best of luck.
