You just have to love irony. The day I finally strip the old boiler off my 0-6-0 is the very same day my boiler builders shop gets slammed with work. There doesn't seem to be any signs of it letting up soon (which is really a good thing!). So I figured that if I want a new boiler before the unmeet, I better do something to help. (actually I blame the ten wheeler crew for inspiring me to get motivated). Today I started drilling holes for the tubes.

After making a dimple at each location, I drilled to 1/4"

You will note that the fire box tube sheet and the smoke box tube sheet are tack welded together to ensure perfect alignment. The second pass was made with a 1/2" drill. The third pass was with a 39/64" drill.

This photo shows the 1/2" holes and I am about to start the 39/64"

Last photo for now. All the holes have been drilled to 39/64". All that remains is to ream the holes to 5/8" for the tubes.

The two plates sort of blend together so that it looks like the top row of holes are right up to the edge. This is just an illusion. You can see the radiused corner just to the upper right of the upper right hole.

Bobby,

Great to see some progress.  Our little un-meet really got us back into the swing of things as well.  We have had workdays for 3 weeks in a row and I believe there will be more to come.  Rumor has it that the tubing you gave me is now acutally underneath a gon.  Wow - work actually getting done.  Keep us updated on your progress..  Git-r-done!

This IS exciting. I was wondering when you were going to start working on that engine of yours. Can't wait to see more pictures. Now I will have to get started on my little project of replumbing. Congratulations.

Hmmm, that mill looks familiar...
Good to see your progress!  I guess you already know about this, but save the final reaming until after the welding is done, as welding will distort the holes, especially on the edges of the tube sheets.

Dan that sounds like sound advise. Especially since the reamer is too long for the current set-up.

Only one update. I had to tear down and re-do the set-up differently to do the reaming. I set the reamer in one of the holes and it hit the mill table before it even touched the sides of the hole! Any way, I got the holes reamed to the final 5/8 ID. Now the plates will be separated and the smoke box tube sheet will be sandwiched with the backhead sheet so the holes for the dry pipes can be drilled. This is fun!
