Track is down this far, just needing ballast. But the plan is to drop back to where the new addition will reconnect to the existing main and progress towards the trestle area. This makes about 465' down so far. The piles of ties are for the parallel trackage.

This past weekend we had a short crew (Mario, Ciara and myself) but we still managed to get tied into the existing switch, install 2 culverts and put down 70' of track. Would have done more but the batteries finally gave out.

Hi,  Enjoyed your update.  I like the look of the steel track you are putting down.  Looks like a fun run day.

I stumbled across this thread today for the first time, and read it front to back.

What a great railway in a beautiful setting! I hope one day to do something similar.

Fantastic trackwork BobbyT. It looks perfect from behind my keyboard. I noticed in some of the earlier photos that the ties appeared to be completely covered with ballast. Was this swept to expose the tie tops later on? Or maybe it was just a camera angle thing.

The little note under your userID shows as 'former member' in your 2010 posts, but the new ones say 'historian'. I guess you must have lost access to your original account sometime in between?

How is the through truss bridge performing? I notice that it isn't a true truss bridge, which would have diagonals in the design. Theoretically, the structural members in a truss bridge would be under either tension or compression, but the top chords in the bridge pictured in post 87 are in bending! Are the bottom chords rather beefy in cross section? It's a little hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like the beam sections directly under the rails are quite deep. Is the bridge welded aluminum?

It has been 5 years since installation, so obviously the bridge is sufficiently strong.

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,

Welcome to the forums. I will try to answer your questions;

a) The ties are covered with ballast only when I first dump the ballast in place. Once the leveling and tamping have been done it is effectively swept clear.
b) I have closed my old account for personal reasons a few years ago. I had to recreate my account.
c) The bridge in question is steel. The top cord is in compression but in reality is just for looks since the base is more than adequate to support anything we can run across it.

Thanks for following us.
Bobby

Thanks for getting back to me Bobby.

I didn't think it was possible for a userID to be reused. Learn something everyday!

I suspected the bridge was sufficiently overbuilt, most of them in the hobby seem to be, and that's not a bad thing.

You may have mentioned back there somewhere what the span of the bridge was...would you mind repeating it?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi gang,

Not sure if anyone still checks this forum or not, but if you do I apologize for not up dating sooner.

Our progress did stall a little over the holidays, but we are back at it.

Bob and I finished installing a new bridge over the dry creek

As you can see the track is slowly approaching the bridge.

The big oak provides a lot of nice shade. Beats working in the hot Florida sun.

As of last weekend, the rail has been installed up to the bridge and the track ballasted but not leveled and tamped. Up until this weekend it was just Bob and I with a little help from his son and daughter in law.
