A while back during a fireup of #7, I had trouble getting pressure up so looked in the firebox and saw water squirting out of a flue.  Needless to say I dumped the fire and let her sit for awhile.  This late summer, Marty Knox came over and had a look and found two more with pin holes so it is time to re-flue.

The wait is over for her repair.  We got the cab off and will get the boiler off next.

My sympathy.  It never happens at a convenient time. On the bright side think of all those little jobs that can be done while the boiler is out
Keep us posted with pix. Pete

Here is a pic of the boiler out of the frame.  She sure is a heavy one!  The chain hoist was groaning a lot as i cranked her up.

  Tom,

Are you guys going to be able to re-tube it, or does it also need new sheets?

Bruce,  i don't know.  We are taking it to Marty Knox hopefully on the 15th and he wil make that call.  The boiler shows heavy rusting on the rear sheet so we think it will need to be replaced.  Marty will ultra sound it and see.

Marty now has the boiler and drivers.  We are going to have him make tires for the drivers as they don't have any and the flanges are worn.  To much sand in the winter really wears them down!

Hi all,  Now that # 7 is apart, our next project is getting the brakes to work on the tender for #24.  She is in the shop and upside down so we can get the brake linkage hooked up.  The short wheelbase makes everything critical to it's placement so it doesn't hit the wheels. All the linkage sits above the rear wheel on the lead truck.  A new challange for us.

We didn't like the brake shoes Jim made so we changed over to our new shoe which means a new brake beam as Jim's were to narrow.  If you look close, some of the linkage is done.

   Tom,

You did'nt think it was going to be easy, now did you! Oh, BTW, are the brakes air, steam or straight mechnaical. Just wondering.

DON'T GET OLD!  How do you stop it?  Anyhow, Marty Knox sent some pics of #7 after the boiler came back from the sand blaster.

An update from the SR&CL.  Marty called and now has all the flues out and part of the front flue sheet.  He said most of the flues had pitting from oxygen scavaging in front of the rear flue sheet.  It appears to me that the LSB 8000 wasn't working like it should.  We are working away on the tender for #24 as time allows.  It is now on it's wheels waiting for the new tank to be finished.

For some reason the website won't allow me to stay signed in & post when over in Michigan so I have to wait till I get home.

Finally back at it in the shop.  Got the tank inlet finished.

  Hey tom,

Thanks for the neat pics. Sorry about all the boiler work thats needed. But as most of here know, its all part of this end of the hobby. I'm sure it will all turn out OK.
