Our Shay had steam brakes on it for many years.  It would put out a tremendous cloud of steam in the cool weather and hose down anyone close.  Mel reworked the air pump and figured air brakes would be nice.  We got a rear truck trailer brake valve and a hand brake from a 47 Chevy truck and made this stand to put air brakes and a parking brake on #4.

When we got the Shay, it was 12 inch gauge so we need a pair of shop trucks to hold it till the new trucks were done.  Once they went on, we had a spare pair of trucks that were kicking around under the floor of the roundhouse.  Jack thought they should have another use, so he made a pair of log bunks to go on them.  He made an adapter on the pilot to hook them to on #4.  Now he can haul logs.

A man with to much time on his hands comes up with another use for the shop trucks.  With the removal of a couple of bolts, the log bunks come off and it can be used as a trailer.

When I see the flats, I say, mount a seat and make us a riding car.

On the subject of a man with to much time, Jack want to see what std gauge would look like in our scale so he had Mel make him a track gauge.  With that in hand and some bigger ties and rail, he laid an end to a branch line to the yard in Phelps.  We now can ship our wood products to the rest of the USA by Rail  Plus, we now have the challenge to build some std gauge cars.

A problem we have in Michigan is leaves in the fall.  They cover the track and keep moisture on the ties if not removed.  I tried a hand blower but that wasn't to fast.  A yard sale had a big leaf blower on wheels for sale so I plunked down my 10.00 and hauled away.  The motor was shot so a new one was purchased and an adapter was made to go from the rectangle outlet to a round hose.  Mel added a third wheel to the front to help move around.  Now the leaves don't stand a chance.  We put it on a flat car and can push it around the RR and blow to hearts content.

And one of the Log Buggies on their maiden run.  The chair flat is the caboose for the train.  A place for the conductor to ride.

Well the next thing we need on the Sandy Ridge is turntables.  Jack decieded he would try and build a simple one for Clear Lake.  A side view of the center part.

Being as our engines are not balanced evenly, we need a way to keep the table from dropping when going on and off.  Jack came up with a bolt thru a angle iron bolted to a couple of treated 4x4's buried deep in the ground.  You can see the bolt here and the end of the table.

Another shot from the past to wake this thread up.  The injector on #4 was leaking water and steam so a new check valve was put on to stop it. and it did.

Our leader Jack, has been complaing every winter about the wheels slipping on ice for #25.  He would say, Boy, if it only had sand"!  Well,  i got Mel on board and we started to build a sand box for the rear end.  We made a sand valve first then got some steel to weld up into a hopper.  Follow along as it comes together.

This is the inside of the valve assy.  The other side pic will be blurry but you can tell where the output is.
