Hi all,

We have some new brake shoes.  Mel went back to a design we had earlier as the basic blob was causing problems.  We fired up the foundry and made about 36 of them.  1 mold  failed to fill all the way as the crucible was low on Aluminum by the time I got to it.  So we got 32 good ones to machine.

Here is a shot of the brake beam on the truck.  You can see how we amputated the draft gear and step bracket to get truck swing.

Work in the shop has slowed with Mel being gone for awhile.  I have been helping Jack replace ties as that is usually the summer project.  He had help last Saturday so I got some shop time in and got the new brake heads fitted to the brake beams.  That afternoon I slapped a coat of paint on them.

On Monday, I took Alina (our passenger car) over to the rounhouse and gave it a wash amd clean inside and out.  It needs to look good for our esteemed visitors that are scheduled for a tour of the Ry.  Pockets & Moose, you may wear your Sunday best and not worry about dust or dirt while riding in Alina.  All garentees are off for other modes of transport tho, so plan accordingly!

Tom,
I know I speak for ol' Moosey as well when I say we can't wait. We're really looking forward to a week from Saturday.

Pass the word for Mel to get well soon.

After spending a whole day giving the Clam Lake Special a royal tour,  Mel and I got back in the shop and finished the brake linkage and got the frame on it's wheels for the first time.  Now we can build the skeleton of the body and then plank it over.

Tom, that's great. Had a mutual friend, from Mass. ask me about that car, today.

I'm saving up aluminum for my next visit.

Pass my regards to the crew.

We need rachet gears for the brake staff so Mel took a hunk of round that looked right and sliced off 6 pieces, drilled a hole in the center and mounted them to a spindle on the rotory table.  Some pics of the work for Pockets.

With the flash on, the camera stopped the action as the mill was spinning on this shot.

Outstanding, Tom. Thanks for the pics. I discovered where I had my issue with the indexer.... I was miscounting. Seems I can't count to 11 anymore without unzipping something!

Its good to see that ol' John is doing better. My best to the whole gang.

Greg,  Mel has to count to 15 is what I think I remember.  No unzipping to do that.  While he was busy milling, I assembled the side frames and welded them to the frame.  Next up is the paint shop for the underside & trucks.

Bruce,  You and Moose need to make a road trip to Gregs together.  You will be impressed with his shop and projects.  I was.  Then you guys can make a quick side trip over to see us.  Keep thinking!

Tom,
Thanks for the kind words. I suffered a severe case of "tool envy" when I saw the SR&CL facility.....
