Thanks guys for the nice words.  We were back at it again and got some more work done.  I got the brake beams on both trucks.  We are working on the brake levers and clevis's we need.  More pics to come.

Mel made up parts for 3/8 inch clevis, that was needed on the brake beam, welded and spotted the center for the hole, turned some washers.  After the hole is drilled, Mel put them on a rotory table and made the ends round with the mill.  I will thread the end and add them.  A little filling on the washers and ready for install.

Tom,
Could you show a couple of shots of Mal's rotary table set up for radiusing the ends?

Thanks,
Greg B.

Greg,  I don't have a pic of that.  I will see if I can get one next time we use it.

Basically it is a 1/4 inch pin held in the center of the table and bolted horizontal on the mill table.  Set the height and center the part on the bit and back off a little so you take the corners down a little at a time.  Crank the rotory table back and forth, move in a little and rotate again and a round ended part comes out.

Here is a shot of a lever rounded and tapered on the mill.  Mel stacks them together with two 1/4 inch bolts and does a bunch together.  Speeds up the process.  The part on the right is the bracket for slack adjustment.  It gets welded to the truck frame below the coupler pocket.

Tom,
I understand the processes involved. I was just curious to see JK's set-up. Many of us build special fixtures for different projects.

Thanks for the responses, though. They will undoubtedly be of benefit to many.

Thanks again,
Greg B.

Here is a shot of the truck upside down with the live lever on the brake beam.  You can see how Mel rounded the ends on the mill.

I put the coupler stops on the pocket (not Pockets as it would hurt to much ) and put the coupler in for a test fit.

Whew, thanks Tom. That would have smarted! Reminds me of a real roundhouse story that I wish I could tell here, but there are some not so innocent names and an ethnic slur involved.... Damned funny story, though.

That car looks to be coming together nice, too.

Pockets,  I got to hear that story some time.

Here is a pic of the end beam held on by the table and the end step bracket placed in the frame to see if they would fit.

Moose,  Glad to host you in July.  I talked to Greg and we have a date that should work.  Will check with Jack this weekend to verify.

Here is a shot with one truck placed on it.  Needle beams just sitting there in this shot.  We wanted to see how the truck swing would go with the step support bracket in place.  We found out not good.  Need to make a change!  Not all designs are trouble free.

The needle beams bolted on and the queen posts placed for a look see.  Some of the brake hardware setting on the frame to see what is needed.

A fascinating build, Tom. I'm really studying the composit construction.

As to the running changes; The engineers create a design, but it's the Journeyman Shop Rat that makes it work.... Tell Mel to sharpen his pencil!
