Thanks Moosey,   would like to meet you and Pockets and anyone else for that matter someday at the RR.

Next up is some new castings Mel made for our passenger trucks we need under our caboose.  Mel has been going thru the car builders encyclopedias and says our queen post don't have to right profile so he made new patterns.  He didn't like the body bolster center castings so made new of those and we need shoes for the truck bolster so he made a pattern for those.  So, on my recent visit we warmed up the foundry and packed a few molds and melted metal and viola, we had parts to use.  Some pics.

So many parts pics, but what are they for?  Most of these parts are for our  passenger car style trucks we are building.  Some shots will follow of the parts going together to form the center swing motion parts.  We found with our first passenger car, that the leaf springs are not need to cary the load.  The coil springs can handle that work ok.  This pick is of the spring pack.  It needs to get attached to the spring plank with 2 screws.  Below the plank is the swing link casting that is held on with 2 screw.  In the background is the Bolster outer support with a piviot resting on it.  It will need 2 screw also.  Plus, in the background is a pile of the wood parts needed for 6 trucks.  Get Hot and build!

I put the tension rod and the shoe in the transoms.  Takes some unique swearing to get them in.  Oh and a hammer helps!

Ah yes, the gentle art of mechanical persuasion.... Ya can't do much railroadin' without it.

Thanks for the update Tom. You know that Moose & I are BIG SR&CL fans.

Greg,

How true!  I am not as skilled as you are with the hammer when it comes to metal shaping.  My skill is trying to hit the same place twice!!! not counting my thumbs!!!!

More days in the shop got us a few top frame members started.  I layed out a pattern jig to try and keep the hole spacing the same and drilled holes in the 12 tops we need.  13 holes by 12 pieces made a sore arm from pulling the drill press lever!  A shot of one.

With all the holes drilled, Mel started welding the parts together.  Here is 2 setting out to cool before grinding the welds down.

With the top frame member made, I could start attaching parts.  Here is the Transom attached and the middle arch bar support bent and inserted.  It is bolted on with the 4 bolts and then at the end when the spring cups are attached..

I had to make a metal plate that ties the two sides of the Transom together.  Then I added the Spring Cups.  They had to be sanded to miss the bend to fit straight out of the mold.  No belt sanding would work so did it the old fashion way with a Bastard file!   Sure had a sore left shoulder/arm after doing 24!
