The car before, notice the hook eyes for the cut leavers.  Our quick way to mount em.  Smooth sides as no door hardware.  Let's us use the car while we develop the jewlery.

Door roller guides.  Please excuse the blurr.  Screw heads will get a dab of red to blend in.

A view of the side showing the new parts, right to left, Door stop, Door handle, Door latch.  On top is the roller guides.  Screw heads have that dab of paint on them now.

That jewelry really brings the car to life. Nice looking pieces.

It was a nice looking car before, the jewelry finishes it off. I also have to comment on the lettering - including the dimensions. It looks great and is a detail too often omitted.

Dick,  Nice lettering took some work on our part.  It doesn't just happen with out planning and labor plus dollars.  I bought a vinyl cutter and Mel found fonts that are really close to RR roman.  He had me buy the correct material to use for stencils and then got the computer to spit it out to the cutter.  Then comes weeding out the stencil, that is a real time user.  It does add a nice detail to the cars we apply them to.  Well worth all the effort.  Thanks for your nice comment

Thanks Greg.  If it wasn't for our foundry, it would take a lot more time to make the parts.  Pounding the sand into the molds and some hot metal and Viola, a part to machine.  That is the short version.

Enclosed is a line up of molds to fill

Well, after almost 4 full months stuck at home I got back to the shop to pound more sand.  The new flat cars needed stake pockets and we had 4.  Mel took them home and cleaned up the best one and made a new mold to pour casting resin into to get  8 for a new pattern board.  Here is the output for the day.  We also tried some of his other patterns.  Some didn't pull without breaking the sand.   Need more draft or shellac.  The other one is parts for a marker lamp.  We need a lot.

Here is a shot of the stake pockets with primer on them.  I found that I didn't center the core and one side was thicker than the other.  Something to try for on the next batch.

Now that my computer is working again, I can post pics again.  Next up is the remodeling of the cab of SR&CL Ry #10.   As some of you have seen, it looks like a phone booth behind a boiler.  Mel has taken on the task to make it more scale looking.  Following will be some pics of the remodel.

Jack painted the frame before we mounted it so Mel could mock up the watertank, seat and coal bunker and find the right height.  Easier to plan before the metal is cut than find out your plan didn't come together like you thought.  He used stranded fiber board for the sides and seat as that is easy to cut and shape.

Here is a shot of the air brake handle and gauges.  Above it is the blue handle of the sander air.  The ring is for the whistle cord and the bell cord is next to it.  The black handle and rod is the water contol valve for the injector.

Tthe other side.  The Throttle and Johnson bar handles stick up.  The water valve for the Injector is by the door.  The window slide in the frame.

Tom,
Change isn't always progress, but you guys really brought it off this time. You took a good looking engine and made her a GREAT looking engine.

Jack's next project was a transfer table to put more cars under roof.  Mel helped him with welding and Jack did the wood work.  Mel cut up another bus frame to use as the table and added rollers to it and a handle.  Angle iron was attatched to the wood and viola, a transfer table.
