Towanda, PA

Appears to be S&NY loco 119.

Title: Re: Guess The Location - 2016
Post by gfluck1 on Jan 3rd, 2016, 10:13pm
TB Diamond is correct, the photo is courtesy of  "Susquehanna & New York Railroad" site and "A nearly panoramic view of the Lehigh Valley’s station in the north end of Towanda is the subject of last week’s “Wordless Wednesday #44”. To the left is SNY engine #119 with converted motor combination car #206. Behind #119 is the old Lehigh Valley stone enginehouse. In the background behind the station is the LV’s mainline coaling tower built ca. 1940, and to the viewer’s right is a Lehigh Valley freight train curving toward the mainline bridge over the Susquehanna River, just out of the frame to the right.
An interesting detail is the (presumed) line of taxis waiting behind the station. This suggests a Lehigh Valley passenger train (perhaps the Black Diamond?) is soon due".

If you have not visited his site I highly recommend it.

I'm thinking this is Hazleton.

Title: Re: Guess The Location - 2016
Post by Bridge 1A on Jan 4th, 2016, 3:05pm
Is that your final answer?

Good, because it IS Hazelton!

This comes to us via the ARHS webite (http://www.anthraciterailroads.org/),and the  photographer being a Mr. John Endler......The date is unknown, but this caption follows the photo -

"This view is looking west at the Lehigh Valley through Hazleton, PA. The doodle bug in the foreground is at South Laurel Street. The passenger train in the center of the image is stopped at Church Street in front of the Lehigh Valley station. The last crossing is Vine Street just before Locust Junction. The top right of the photo where all of the cars are is the Pennsylvania Railroad station. The tall building in the top center of the image is the Cranberry Coal Breaker at Cranberry Junction. The tracks going up and curving to the left go to Hazle Junction which heads towards Oneida Junction where the Shepton Branch splits from the main to Delano, PA."

Ok, we have to solve this one before too much of that Old Heidleberg disappears... Being an Upstate NY guy, I'm a bit shaky on my Pennsylvania locations, but this looks to me like it's somewhere in the Wilkes-Barre mountains. Is that getting warm?

There is also Owego and Oswego NY, but I have always known both of them well, so no confusion there..

and dont forget Waverly NY, Waverly PA, and South Waverly PA! ;)
South Waverly PA is directly south of Waverly NY, but South Waverly PA is 100 miles away from Waverly PA, and has no relation to it whatsoever!

Scot - Good points......And I never knew about the South Waverly!

And in keeping things LV-themed, there's always Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe, PA) and Manunka Chunk (Technically the village of Delaware on the DL&W Old Road here in NJ), too........

Also....

1. Rochester, NY- served by the B&O/BR&P, Erie/EL, LV, Pennsy and NYC

vs.

Rochester, PA- served by the Pennsy

2. The Buffalo Creek RR -served the Buffalo, NY waterfront. Jointly owned by LV and Erie/EL.

vs.

The Buffalo Creek & Gauley RR -defunct shortline in West Virginia.

This must've been fun for dispatchers and shipping clerks back in the day!

There is also a Town of Rochester NY (Ulster County) that was on the NYO&W's Kingston branch.

For Coxton/Croxton, I've used this: New Jersey has an 'r', as does Croxton yard. Pennsylvania doesn't have an 'r', neither does Coxton.

That would be a logical guess. Unfortunately, more of the LV trackage used to be the mainline. I am thinking "coal country" here-maybe the mainline to Mt Carmel. Just my .02 worth.

Title: Re: Guess The Location - 2016
Post by J. W. Booth on Feb 11th, 2016, 3:17pm
Hmmm, while I don't disagree with you that this photo was taken in "coal country", wouldn't anything technically "once the mainline" be relegated to a few specific locales? namely -

The line between South Plainfield and Perth Amboy (clearly not an option here)

The connection to the Erie between Waverly, NY and South Waverly, PA. once used for interchange/coal transfer.

The aforementioned "passenger mainline" from Mt. Top/Gracedale to Wilkes-Barre.

Of course, predecessor RR's like the EC&N, GI&S, SC and the L&M, etc., of whom the LV "absorbed" their mainlines, could also be considered "former mainlines", this reader took the clue to mean LVRR-constructed trackage that had become secondary in nature in the post 1900 era.

Keith nailed it, the photo is from the "Susquehanna & New York Railroad;
Preserving the Memory of a Ghost Railroad" website

http://snyrr.com/category/locations/towanda/page/3/

Last week’s “Wordless Wednesday” is a shot of the LV interchange at North Towanda. The Federal-style building in the distance is listed as a warehouse on my copy of a 1927 Sanborn map, and may date to the days of the Pennsylvania Canal. Note the long string of Lehigh Valley hoppers on the interchange tracks.

Refer to the red circle on the attached diagram to provide the location in which the photo depicts.

Another dumb Keith Bednar non move.  When I worked the Jeddo mine run we got into the old roundhouse at Ashmore. That is when the Berylum (spelling?) plant took over the operation. Well the entire place was a "time machine". Just like it was when the LV moved out. The tower was also standing at that time. Well I never took one photo !!  What a Jerk !! Another bad move on that job was not taking photos when we shifted the Weatherly foundry. Like I said, "what a jerk".   Keith

Easy Friend,

Back in the day, we always thought it will be there, so why take pistures.  So many guys our age have the same regrets.  It is what it is.

I remember the coaling tower, too, but I think the roundhouse was locked-up or fenced-off by the early 70s.   I'm kicking myself for not going up in the tower.  As I recall, it had a metal circular stair at one end.

Jeddo Highland #2, #5, and the Shops were the same way.  All of the equipment in the shops were belt driven off a line along the ceiling.  It was like walking back 50 years.  Wierd think, there were still jobs on the work benches, like the guys left and never came back.

At lease we saw it and can share what shreads we have left.

CB

Thank goodness, you guys were scaring me (or pitying me for putting out such a ridiculously easy one)

Yes, we are looking at Croxton Yard circa 1973.

What about THIS one? Still easy, but you might need to summon your "EL-VEE" powers of deduction to figure it out if you're not from the Valley.

Maybe he just washed his hands and can't do a thing with them  ;D

The new photo is Easton with the tower cut off.   IF that's right, interesting to see blades and search lights on the bridge.

Ha! I did it AGAIN!

This is what happens when you grow up in New Jersey, and then decide to become a LV fan! The funny part is, I read what I typed, stopped, second guessed myself, and then said , "no, THAT'S right!" Big dummy.......

So now, I REALLY get the joke!

Home field advantage!

But yes, it's Palmerton!

As you can see, it's what was missing from the cropped photo that ID's it, just like I said!

Until today, I didn't know that this was the birthplace of a man who hung out with Empire Builders Henry Flagler and Henry Rogers. I wonder if, as a child, his dreams of big industry were fueled by the railroad?

Clearboard is correct, this is Richford, NY, circa 1908, back in the days when the depot was the center of small (and large) town life.

Easton is the correct city, could we narrow it down just a little, there's a couple of possibilities.

Believe that Keith ("Darktown2") nailed this one first, but it's the bridge over 24th street on the Easton & Northern branch.  (Brother Mike included a nice Bob Wilt photo at that same location in his article on the E&N in the spring 2014 issue of TRP.)

24th Street bridge was over the line, pictured is the bridge/trestle over Spring Street (EA-78). Photo is shared from FB and listed as taken in 1973 and the photographer not listed.

Was surprised to see that a street view of that area from Googlemaps shows the bridge over Spring Street still in place.

Nice picture....thanks for posting!
