Title: LV Diesel Roster
Post by gfluck1 on May 8th, 2011, 7:24am
As I am enjoying posting on the “Forums” and the “LV Freight Info” thread, I thought, why not start new topic that covers the “Lehigh Valley’s Diesel Roster”. That being said, I’m going to provide a little general information on the class and the pertinent data of the units on the roster, starting with the last locomotives received. As always comments (good or bad) and corrections are welcome.

Thanks

G. F.

While its obviously some excellent modeling, we probably shouldn't mix in model photos with prototype photos, just for the purposes of historic accuracy..
(there is  model photo in this thread, and one slipped into the "freight info" thread too..)

perhaps some of Lee's stunning O-scale modeling?..so good you *almost* cant even tell they are models!  :o im not sure if someone actually thinks they are photos of prototype equipment, or if someone is attempting to sneak in some model photos in to see if anyone notices!  :D (I noticed!) ;)

Love these photos-interesting to see them!

Question:  Is those Batz trucks under the 102, or an early Blunt?

To the best of my knowledge the HH series used Blunt trucks exclusively.

Just now read that the GP-9 was painted into this scheme in 1971, per "Lehigh Valley In Color, Vol.2" Pg 107.

I cannot speak for the #216, but I suspect it may have been right around the same time.

According to Steckler in Lehigh Valley Railroad Diesel Paint Schemes (1925-1976), the 216 was painted in the wide yellow band scheme in August 1973 and the 301 received the same scheme in 1972.

Using the same reference, the 216 was repainted in April 1974 and the 301 in February 1976, both to the final scheme they would have until ConRail.

It will be sold to the Illinois Central railway in 1968, then traded to the Precision Engineering Co. Note – The Precision Engineering Co. manufactures crankshafts, the business is expanded to include locomotive rebuilding in 1963, PECO becomes Precision National Corporation (PNC) in January of 1970.

The transfer from TC to IC was not a sale of the engine.  The TC was bankrupt and divided up and sold.   How the equipment was divided, I do not know, but I would suspect that it was also divided with the sale of the lines.

Nashville to Hopkinsville KY (the west end) went to the Illinois Central.  Nashville to Crossville TN went to the Louisville and Nashville.  Crossville to Harriman TN went to the Southern.

Most of the western part is now abandoned.  That which remains does so because of Tennessee DOT, the counties through which the line runs and short line operators.  Nashville to Ashland City TN remains and is now the Nashville and Western, but only the part within Nashville is in service because the Cumberland rRiver bridge is out of service.  Nashville to Monterey TN, representing most of the L&N's portion, remains as the Nashville and Eastern, and the 32 miles from Nashville to Lebanon hosts the Music City Star commuter service.  The Southern railroad portion between Harriman and Crab Orchard, a huge quarry operation remains and so far as I know is still owned by Norfolk Southern.
