I have seen movies of the crews "kicking" cars into the river. It was amazing how the cars just went under water so fast into the whirlpool.  I am not sure how they finally got the situation under control. It was a sad day indeed for the loss of the coal industry in the Wyoming valley.
I am not sure it ever recovered.   Keith

Very interesting!
The Packer Ave bridge in Sayre was "scheduled to go" in 1968..
It then stood another 17 years!
It wasnt removed and replaced until 1985!  ;)

I wonder what happened?
probably this:

LV was under the control of PRR, then Penn Central.
This newspaper article is dated May 20, 1968..
PC had just been created in February 1968, a few months before..
PC struggled, then went bankrupt in 1970, which was the major factor in the planning for Conrail to begin..
the LV likely just washed their hands of the Packer ave bridge..they had much bigger problems at the time to deal with..

then in 1976 the bridge became "Conrails problem"..
then conrail took almost another decade to deal with it, and finally it was replaced in 1985..17 years after this newspaper article!
