It might be harder to reschedule than to deal with the weather!

Scanned my Sayre maps: large 3'x6' 1894, and two B-size from 1917

I wouldn't be opposed to postponing it...I have to be in Albany all next week for work, and this would give me a little extra time to get ready for it. And 30 degree weather isn't necessarily my cup of tea.

The closer we get to Saturday, the worse the forecast becomes.
I have been watching the forecasts all week, and its generally been "35 degrees and partly cloudy" for Sayre..cold, but not a big deal.

Now the forecast for Saturday is high of 33 and 90% chance of snow. 1-3 inches.
urrrrrr..

Its now warm enough that the snow probably wont even stick to the roads..so it likely wont impact driving..but its certainty not ideal..should we consider postponing for a nicer weekend? (I can't do the following weekend..)

or should we just go for it? thoughts?

Scot

I would prefer to go for it! I have commitments on the weekend of the 16th and I need the weekend of 23rd as preparation to replace my car.

For those who remember the 2014 trip, we did have a little snow that day, too.

whelp, we are almost at the 24 hour mark!
its best we make the call..

The forecast is now improving, a bit..the weather for Sayre:

https://weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/l/USPA1447:1:US

(click on "next 8 hours" a few times to get to Saturday)

Says 80% chance of snow through 9, 10 and 11am.
then decreasing through the rest of the day..only 5% chance by 6pm.
That mirrors the Channel 8 weather map, that showed the snow clearing out of the southern tier during the afternoon..looks like its should be light morning snow only at this point, not all day.

We have three votes to press on, (including me) and one for postponing, (sorry Aric! hope you can still make it!)

So lets call it officially "on"..unless something drastic changes for the forecast, which probably isnt too likely at this point..its not ideal weather, would be nice if it was better, but we can handle it...IMO light snow is actually preferable to rain, since we will be spending some time outside..the only concern I had was snow for driving, but "spring snow" usually isnt an issue on the roads..Let's carry on!

Safe travels you guys and do have an enjoyable tour. Have to be in Denver for a wedding, alas.

Will be thinking of you folks and of the evening I sat at the Lehigh Tavern bar having a beer with my Grandfather, Johnathon Morningstar. Could see a couple LVRR C420 locos shuttling cars across the street. Now the LVRR is gone, Grandpa is gone and I no longer drink beer but the old Lehigh Tavern is still there, by golly. Thanks for that info, Keith.

Pardon the digression.

Scot, Thanks for the offer to ride along. But I'll drive myself as I'll be bringing extra gear to accommodate whatever weather we have. Look for a blue basic Chevy pick up. -yeah my van finally wore out enough it wasn't worth the cost to fix it up to pass inspection, do miss the height of it to stand on for pictures!--
Was able to print out the pictures finally. Widow 10 has a different format and then had printing problems and only today figured out why, apparently the printer never got updated to Window 10, was still on Window 7 which is puzzling but then.
Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Scot, according to the National Weather Service:  "A chance of snow showers before noon, then a chance of rain and snow showers between noon and 3pm, then a chance of snow showers after 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 36. North wind 6 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible".

Glad we're going ahead. Dress properly, it's nothing we can't handle. Could be tough to reschedule when we've had this date penciled in for weeks, IMO.

Paul, If we make it to the Lehigh Tavern, will gladly raise a glass to you and your Grandfather, Mr. Morningstar. Loved the photo a while back of him on the passenger train in his uniform.

See you all tomorrow,

Bob

That is absolutely no problem, Scot! I will definitely be there, and Dan Armitage is planning on being there too. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Excellent photographic record overall.

Great to see the Lehigh Tavern and to know that the old Bradford Hotel still stands.

And we had a drink for the entire Morningstar crew and all the brother railroaders that have "caught the westbound".  What a GREAT bunch of guys.  I really could have made a book, or two !!!!!  Thanks Bob.  Keith

My heartfelt thanks, guys. Brings back a lot of memories. Appreciate the tribute to Grandpa and to all the great Lehigh folks who have gone on before which includes my Uncle Norman Morningstar, my Uncle Donald Palmer and my Cousin Joe Morningstar. The Lehigh Valley Railroad was a family affair for so very many folks and will be forever missed by all. Thank you for helping keep the memory alive.

Here are my contributions from the meet-up akak A Walk with the Lehigh Valley RR.

At our first stop, we took a look at the former Erie RR/ EL main, which is now operated by NS. LV had trackage rights at this location, initially for running to Buffalo and then later for accessing a remnant of the EC&N in the Elmira/Horseheads area.

Most of our crew (minus the Bednars) gathered here. Scot is giving a history lesson for those who don't know the area:

Both photos in this post were taken by me Saturday 4/9/2016 in Waverly, NY.
