"Hippo" was (and still is) the nick-name for a PRR I1s class Decopod.
They were the largest class of 2-10-0 Decopods ever built..An amazing 598 members of the class were built..One survives today, in Hamburg, on the south side of Buffalo.

The Hippos were famous among PRR Steam, and in Western NY.
They were among the last PRR steamers running, some of which were hauling coal on the PRR Elmira Branch up to Sodus Bay as late as 1957.

Ideas for Buffalo:

LV specific:
- Williamsville - LV depot and beautifully restored LV caboose.
- Tifft Terminal - Nature preserve (site of LV barge canals) and the bridge over tracks.
- Hamburg - perhaps a Buffalo Southern visit? operating LV Alco S2 is there.
- Eden - a non-operating LV Alco S2.
- If time or location fits the schedule, Wendys for lunch at the Dingens engine terminal.
(nothing to see there, no trace of the LV..but it's the site of the LV East Buffalo engine terminal and passenger station..timing probably wont work though to get over to that area around lunchtime, so that idea probably wont work out..)

Those are all the LV-specific things I can think of..
other ideas:

- Hamburg - visiting the PRR Hippo is a must!
- CP draw?
- If anyone knows of any good NS or CSX spots to visit, that would be good.
- Buffalo Terminal? if it happens to be open. (or even if its not, can check out the outside)
- There is a very impressive gigantic CP 4-8-4 just across the river at Fort Erie, if people have their passports or NY enhanced licenses..(traffic over the bridge could be a hassle though..and we will probably have more than enough to do without leaving US soil..but im just throwing it out there..)
- I think the WNYRHS Buffalo Creek Alco HH660 is visitable "out in the open" (as opposed to being buried deep in a freight yard and inaccessible)
- I have been wanting, for decades, to find B&P SD45's in Buffalo! haven't been successful yet, and time is running short for them..(just a personal one there!
- If time permits, Medina RR museum and NYC E-units on the way home..or on the way out.

other ideas welcome!
Scot

OK, since the votes are leaning in favor of Buffalo... I will contact the WNYRHS to to arrange a visit to the depot in Williamsville.

Speaking of the WNYRHS, the HH660 is very fitting, since BCK was jointly owned by LV and Erie/EL.

The Tifft nature preserve is also a good idea, since it is next to CSX Track 17 (a surviving LV yard track!) and what appears to be the base for a water tower/tank. The preserve is pretty much open all year long, so it will be easy to visit.

The former LV S2s will be a bit harder. They are both in storage at Hamburg- #105 is stored serviceable and #107 is derelict. I can contact BSOR to see if we can look at the S2s, but they don't usually operate on Saturdays. We should get permission to enter there, as BSOR's office and shops are in the Great Lakes Concrete plant facility.

CP Draw is another good idea. The active bridge and track are both former BCK... and the joint LV/N&W trains did cross it 40 years ago. The bridge can be viewed from the former DL&W embankment at the east end of Red Jacket Park.

B&P could be really tough. GWI generally doesn't like visitors on the property. Sorry about that.

Another place we could visit would be Niagara Falls.  We could go to the former LV yard and/or the former LV building currently being used by Amtrak as a station.

What do the rest of you think?

how about *exactly* the same!
I can tell by the placement of the various power lines/poles/structures that you very carefully lined up everything exactly, and found the spot where the original photographer was standing within a matter of mere feet..well done!

Buffalo/Rochester is just a little too far for me for one day anymore.Almost ten hours up/back..I'd be up for Sayre or anything closer..Also,there's a big R&N train ride locally a few weeks later, just don't have the cash to do both..

OK, I think we will go with Saturday 4/5/2014 for the 4th annual edition of A Walk With The Lehigh Valley RR. I will contact the WNYRHS soon to set up our visit.

Thanks Matt!
looks like it's coming together!

Ive been thinking where we should all meet..
"an easy to get to" central location in the Rochester area, with breakfast potential, and a safe place where people can leave cars, because im sure it would make sense to do some carpooling..
I have one idea so far:

1. Marketplace Mall in Henrietta..Very easy for our Pennsylvania friends to find..No diner really, (that I know of) but there is a Starbucks in the middle of the mall..could grab some coffee/bagel/muffin type things..then we could carpool, leave some cars behind, and hop right on the thruway for Buffalo..

other suggestions welcome!

thanks,
Scot

The 4/5/14 date is good with me. If any of our attendees from more southern/eastern locations who might not be all that familiar with the way to our meeting point would like to meet me around the Geneva area and either 1- follow me up to Rochester, or 2- carpool up there, let me know. It doesn't really make sense for everyone to drive the whole way.

Matt, thanks for getting the ball rolling this time.

Looking forward to another fun day!

OK, how about a RR-themed place to meet for breakfast? I suggest we meet at the D&R Depot in Leroy, NY. It is a former B&O/BR&P depot that sits next to the Rochester & Southern RR and has great food. D&R Depot is maybe 5 or 10 minutes south of the Thruway, so it's not too far off the beaten path. A Tops grocery store is nearby- the cars not being driven to Buffalo could be left there safely.

Good news! I have arranged for a tour of the Williamsville depot on Saturday 4/5. By coincidence, our host is having a fundraiser dinner for the depot that afternoon, so the tour must be in the morning. Can we all get there by 9 or 10 AM?

Here is a proposed itinerary for our 4th annual edition of A Walk With The Lehigh Valley RR.

8:00 AM- meet for breakfast in either Leroy or Henrietta.

10:00 AM- tour of ex-LV depot in Williamsviile

12 Noon- check out ex-BCK HH660 in Hamburg, NY  (I have found out where she is stored)

1:00 PM- visit Tifft Nature Preserve (formerly Tifft terminal)

3:30 PM- visit ex-LV building now used as Amtrak station in Niagara Falls

Any thoughts on this schedule? All in favor say "Aye" please.

Matt,
that sounds great! im in!
There are also two LV Alco S2's in Hamburg..not sure if we will be able to visit them though..
and the "Hippo"..(no problem visiting that)..We can work them in when we are in the Hamburg area..

If we have time and the light holds, there is also Medina on the way back..Museum will probably be closed by then, but we can check out the E-units..

Also if time allows, I would love to visit CP Draw..I undertsnad there is a public park right next to it..I have seen SK draw from a distance, but I have never been "up close and personal"..That could maybe fit in right after Tifft and before Niagara Falls..

And I like your D&R depot idea in Leroy for the meeting place..
sounds like a cool trip!
