The link has been on my mind since it was found in the water at Rochester Jct. I was just trying to figure out when the LV went to all couplers on the freight cars. I was looking in Archers book and on page 142 it shows a wreck at Dushore,PA, 10/28/1896. The cars over the bank have the link and pin set up. Also on page 145, showing the Black Diamond Express on it's inaugural run. Date May 16 1896. That engine had the link and pin set up as well. So I am not sure when the link and pin was eliminated all together. Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this subject can shed some light on this subject.   Take err easy   Keith

Keith,

If you have Herb Trice's book, "The Gangly Country Cousin", on page 74 you'll
see a 4-wheel wooden caboose pictured at Camden, NY. That looks to me like
a link and pin set-up. That photo is dated 1902.

A builder photo published in R&LHS Bulletin No. 126 of LVRR Camelback 0-8-0 No. 3052 which was outshopped in November 1905 depicts the loco with a automatic coupler.

Here is a photo of LVRR RS3 No. 211 with RM-2 just west of the Old Dutch Road grade crossing. Took the photo with a Topcon Super D camera on 21 May 1971. The 211 did not remain on this job for very long.

The LV main was still Rule 251 back in those days. I have a bit of difficulty with the realization that I took this photo almost 41 years ago.

Today, a comparison shot is nearly impossible as where I was standing now sports thick brush 6 feet high.

Were there and crossing signals on old dutch, or just crossbucks? I could have sworn after the tracks were reduced to 1, there were poles with crossbucks and wires for signals hanging out of them.

A big "THANK YOU" goes out to Matt and John Stewart for setting
things up, to Mark for setting up the visit to Bernie's caboose in
Victor (and thanks to Bernie himself and his time!).

You're welcome, Charlie. It was nice to meet you after talking online all these years. My pics will be coming soon.

The Old Dutch Road grade crossing was protected by wooden crossbucks. Back in the 1970s Old Dutch Road was a narrow and very lightly used dirt road.

Mile Square Road had flashing signals and gates. Have a slide in my files of these being dismantled.

Hi all, once again I had a great time Saturday. It was good to see some "old" friends and great to meet 2 new ones, Charlie and Keith.  You guys are the only ones who understand my Lehigh Valley "fascination". Keith you are quite a character, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I am already looking forward to doing something next year.

Charlie's pics covered all the bases, I don't have too much more to add. But here is a shot of the Junction from Saturday to compare with Keith's images from yesteryear.

This building is going to look like the old freight house when it's done, it's being built in the same spot. view looking east from Plains Rd., between the tracks

Another view, looking down the Rochester branch toward the station site, and the mainline. The boxcar is right at home here. Was told there are plans for more track and rr cars, at least 1 being a flatcar to be used as a stage for bands, etc. to really bring the site back to life

Here is a photo of the crossing warning devices being dismantled at Mile Square Road.

Took this in February 1978 during what was a very severe winter in the northeast.
