Bob, it was great meeting you as well. Please don't forget to either friend me on facebook, or shoot me an e-mail. I have got tons of pictures of what it all looked like, some I'm sure you have seen, and some maybe not!  Markon Apr 4th, 2011, 1:47pm, Kendaia1 wrote:       (Click here for original message)
It was great to meet all you guys, and spend time with people who share the same interests. Definitely was a good day! BTW I think they have done a GREAT  job with the Lehigh Valley Trail, and the site of Rochester Junction was Very Cool, I just wish I could have seen it back in the day. The 211 was also very cool... Have to make a trip back sometime this summer to take a ride!

Henry wanted to see pictures from our meet-up... and I shall share some of mine tonight. The day began in Manchester and I found an old relic before I even got to the former LV yard! This is a former LV caboose wearing the colors of its 2nd owner, Conrail.

The caboose was just a mile or two from the old LV yard in Manchester. Although the yarfd isn't the major classification facility it was back in the LV's heyday, it is still used by the Finger Lakes Railway (Ontario Central RR).

The old pump house still stands, without a tank or anything to pump.

Photo taken by me Saturday 4/2/2011 in Manchester, NY. The tank stood on the concrete next to the pump house.

The old LV round house still stands. It is in very rough shape and we stayed outside of it.

The turntable is still present. Part of the pit is filled in and the whole thing is hard to see through a thicket of tall brush.

This old truck (sitting next to the round house) was a cool surprise for me. The grill looks homemade- maybe it was added to protect the truck from deer?

This building appeared to be a repair shop. Like the round house, I stayed outside for safety's sake.

Two ancient LV boxcars were sitting on an isolated piece of track next to the yard.

A 3rd LV boxcar sat a short distance away from the other two.

After we completed our tour of Manchester, the entire gang picked up stakes and headed west to Fishers. This trail is the former Lehigh Valley mainline, looking westward.

We walked out to where the LV main used to pass over the NYC Auburn Road. This view is looking down from the Lehigh Valley Trail to the Auburn Trail.

Now we are looking eastward at the bridge built by the LV to cross over the NYC.

Looking down at the Auburn Road from the bridge, I wondered what is what like for LV passengers to see a New York Central train pass under the bridge (or vice versa).

This plaque on the Auburn Trail commemorates a major derailment on the LV at the bridge back in 1960. (It was also discussed in another thread.) The NYC tracks under the bridge had been removed shortly before the derailment.

Matt,
nice pics!
thanks for posting..

just for the record, thats the PRR caboose!
the LV caboose is the one right behind it, still in very worn and rusted CR blue.
Chris posted pics of both cabesses here:

https://picasaweb.google.com/alsorailfan/4211LVRochesterMeetUp#

The LV caboose is number 95100, built in Sayre in 1941.

The grey PRR cabin car is N-5 class, built 1916-1929.
PRR/PC/CR 19101 (I believe it carried the same number its entire career)

Scot- thanks for the correction.
Henry- you're welcome!

Resuming the series, let's take a look at Mendon. The location was Rochester Junction until the last train rolled through here in the early '80s. Now it's a nicely maintained trail, complete with reminders of the LV past like this one.

Some of the meet-up crew (l-r): Darren, Ken, Scot and John.

Photo taken by me Saturday 4/2/2011 in Mendon, NY. They are standing on the site of the LV station, which burned down in 1970.
