NS3360,

If you are ever interested in photographing the remnants of the LNE in the anthracite region, drop me a line. I'd be glad to show you around. A lot of it is lost and overgrown in the woods. I've taken pictures of most of it, though it is on film, not digital.

It's hard to imagine the LNE anywhere in this area, since nature has reclaimed most if not all.

Thanks everyone.  Andy, I'll remember your invitation next time I venture into anthracite country. I'd like to see what remains at Arlington Yard and surrounding area...

It is interesting to note that during the peak years of the LNE (1930s), at least 5 trains operating as turnarounds ran over Summit grade in daylight. There may be more but I'm still finding out more info. But in 1960 and the last year 1961, only one train a day ran over Summit grade and it ran at night. It was the merchandise train that left Pen Argyl sround 6 PM and passed Benders after 7PM. It then went to Tadmor where pickups and setouts were made. It then went to Bethlehem Junction (JU) to interchange per diem cars to the CNJ. It then went back up the Bethlehem Branch to Summit and tripled the hill at Summit Siding. It then went directly to Pen Argyl. By this time it was 6AM so the merchandise would sit there more 20 or more hours or so because the Maybrook train would leave after 3AM. This was because when they would triple the hill at Summit, this would take 3-4 hours in darkness. L&NE could have set up a helper district like in steam days when the mighty 2-10-0 Decapods (my favorite LNE engines) struggled up the grade. But LNE was looking to cut costs at the time so no helpers were ever used in diesel days as far as I know...
Here is a pic at Chapman Quarries on the Bethlehem Branch and if you look to the left you can see the abutments of the old Chapman Quarries Siding where helper engines were based in the steam era.

Here is a view of the abutments that were on the Chapman Quarries Siding.  That is the Monacacy Creek. It was just a short stub siding to store helper engines but in L&L days it continued to the slate quarries. I could just imagine #401 sitting here...

Here is a pic of all the old telegraph poles that still line the Bethlehem Branch from Bath to Chapman Quarries. I took this in the fall, so you can't see all of them but the one closest to the road crossing is in the red circle. In this area alone, there are as many as 15 that I have found. But from Chapman Quarries to Benders, just the stumps of the poles remain. That bridge in one of my other pics is by the third red dot, which is also the location of the pic in Carstens book with 307 and 401 leaving Bath.

This is right at where the railroad crossing would be on Route 987 at Chapmans.

Compare this pic with the picture of 403 on page 78 of the LNE History book. This was taken at near the same location in Point Phillip near Benders Junction. Notice the stump of the old telegraph pole in the foreground.

Here's a before and after set of the small cut at Chapman's Quarries. On the left, 2-10-0 Decapod #401 struggles up the hill at Chapmans in 1942. On the right, a photo I took at the same location in 2004.

Geez...what a difference. I'm curious to see how many "Before & After" photos we can get on this board. Would be nice to share them.

I posted another before and after photo under the 'LNE Main Line' thread showing Horn Springs (near Wind Gap)  then and now.

Here is Benders Junction as it exists today.  These photos are also under the 'LNE Main Line' thread. First, here is the train order office. There is also a tool shed behind it. I'm at the first crossing, as close as possible since it is all posted No Trespassing.

Also from my hike, I never had time to scan and post these...
First, compare this photo to the 1910 photo from History of the L&NE book.
I'm standing near the exact same spot as the 1910 photo was taken. The Chapman Quarries Siding abutments remain over the Monacacy Creek and the station would be where the curve is.

In this view, are you looking back toward Bath and does the siding branch off to the right?  Also, did the siding use the bridge abutments and cross the Monocacy?
