Does anyone know what the highlighted item in my photo of L&HR caboose #16 is...I found photos of L&HR 12 and 17 and they both have it. It looks to be a piece of about 3/4 inch diameter black iron plumbing pipe with an elbow at the end..Was this maybe a toilet compartment vent? In the photo of L&HR 12 it's on the same side as the smoke jack (Stove pipe) .

Photo of #17 from from RAILROAD.NET.. The pipe would've faced upward on #16 originally.   Here's the link for the pic..Cool site     http://www.railroad.net/articles/railfanning/northeastcabooses/index.php

Yes, it's the lav vent- on all the 10-class, as built. The lav was in the 'B' end left corner.

Thanx for the quick answer on that Marty.   I looked in my copy of READING COMPANY CABOOSES by John W Hall and while there is a chapter on the  Reading class 50 NmN cabooses (and the 8 L&HR cabs that were part of the order) there is no mention of the toilets being installed .Were the sanitaty facilites installed later by the L&HR themselves then? P.S. There's also  nice pic of L&HR #18 at Warwick New York in the Foreign Roads chapter of that same book
