L&HR: What's Left?

Hey everyone,
I don't know an awful lot about the L&HR and I would like to start asking a few questions. I would like to know what is left of the L&HR? That includes pieces of railroad, equipment, bridges, buildings, etc. Thanks in advance for any help!

Take Care.
Jeff

I've explored from about Great Meadows NJ down to Phillipsburg NJ. The Great Meadows Station is still there (I think Charlie has a pic). If you look in "Along the L&HR" thread I have some shots around Buttzville NJ. From what I can tell the row between Great Meadows and Belvidere is in tact, meaning all the bridges are still in place. Just lay track and you'd have the rr back. There are tracks at the Mansfield Street Station, Belvidere. Two abandoned Conrail mow cars are there and some concrete foundations, old switches, etc. There is most likely lots of "little goodies" there if you look around. From Belvidere South to the NS switch the tracks are still there but in rough shape. From the L&HR switch point to Phillipsburg is active NS track. This is the section that was shared by the PRR and L&HR. The L&HR Yard at Phillipsburg is an active NS Yard used by the NS and the Bel Del. There is at least one structure there but I have yet to walk it. The L&HR bridge (now NS/Bel Del) is still there that goes to PA where the L&HR picked up the main (now active NS) to its Allentown connections...

Hope that helps. I'm going to do some re-con work but Ivan took priority and it may have affected the shared line at Hutchinson/Foul Rift NJ...

Here are some pics that I took on the Sparta/Franklin/Ogdensburg area. Some of these tracks are still utilized today by the NYS&W.

Jeff -

As for stations, I've seen Great Meadows (it's preserved and in use by a business)...here's also an ancient wood  combine on the siding there (see my earlier pix).  I believe also that Allamuchy freight house has been preserved, tho I've not  been there myself.  Maybe Jim or Ken can confirm that.

I'm also told that some more buildings survive, esp at the northern end, Maybrook etc.

PS  - Jimmy, no problem reposting my pic.

Some days, the most interesting person you meet is a river with a train running beside it.

Jim, Charlie, and Ken,
Thanks for all the information about the L&HR. I was also digging around for some old equipment that is still around from the L&HR but have come up with nothing. Anyone have a listing on this?

Jeff -

The surviving L&HR equipment (other than locomotives) that I've heard about is pretty limited.  L&HR cabooses #16 and #18 and flanger #105 are preserved at Phillipsburg NJ by the URHS.   There's another wood caboose, (#12)...that's on a lot in Delaware NJ.

Perhaps someone can add to the list.

-Charlie

PS - If you want a detailed surviving loco list, I can re-post that...but it should be on here someplace already.  The Arkansas & Missouri has a handful of the C420's, and the Battenkill has two of the RS3's.

To my understanding, no L&HR steamers survive.

What a coincidence!!!!!

I was at Maybrook all day though not my intention and have some nice pictures ans STORIES from the employees themselves. A little undercover work and snooping around yielded some great photos which were difficult to get since these buildings were not accessible by car.

I will try and post them this evening.

My original plan was to visit Maybrook, Campbell Hall, Greycourt and back to my favorite place in this area, Warwick.

As far as Great Meadows, perhaps Jim and I can get those areas.

To date, I have Warwick, Campbell Hall, Maybrook, Sparta, Franklin. Odgensburg and some additional shots of Warwick are next.

Ken

Stay tuned.

Folks,

I will post my pictures and stories told by some of the nice people of Maybrook on the Lehigh & Hudson River -> "Upper End".

You know, no matter how many times I think I could start in one area and be finished with it, it never works out. I will be heading up there again to meet the people that run the Maybrook Museum; so much for Greycourt.

It seems I can never stay on track   as they had me convinced to drive up to see the Poughkeepsie to see the bridge. I wish I could do this full time. Anyone care to support my addition so I can continue on these jaunts?

Okay, I thought I would try

Pics to be uploaded tomorrow

Ken
