As part of a "Tiger" grant plus some state money to improve the port of Gulfport MS and access to it, the Gulfport to Hattiesburg portion of the ex Illinois Central's G&SI line is being upgraded to allow 49 mph speeds, 286,000 pound cars, and double stack clearances.  The announcement goes back to 2010, so I am not exactly giving latest breaking news on this.
The improvements include a near complete relay with new 115RE rail CWR, about 1,000 ties per mile of new ties, and bridge upgrades.  Most of it appears to have been done last year.
What was not mentioned in any of the information was anything about what if anything was or is being done to the part between Jackson MS and Hattiesburg, as going of this piece of railroad is necessary for any KCS traffic out of Gulfport to reach the rest of the system.
More later
