What is going on with the turntable? Looks like it is out of service and the pit being filled in, or something.

I believe the turntable is still capable of being moved, the pit rail is still in place and the pit itself is clear of debris. There is only one track left as a through route to the one roundhouse stall though, so there is no reason for it to need to pivot. I believe the snow fence is just to keep people or vehicles from falling in.

OK. Thanks for that - I thought it looked like the pit rail was gone and the side walls being pushed in. Guess just the way i saw it.

Certainly not much point in moving it unless being used to turn equipment. Like Office Cars or F or E units.

That's about as simple as a lift bridge gets...

I think the "lift" is no longer operational.

Apparently it still is - there was a public hearing by the Coast Guard on November 14 of this year concerning proposed closure and its impact on navigation.

Very much an active bridge, shown here lowering for rail traffic ahead of a northbound freight. FEC has another one, literally a twin, down the line in Jupiter, FL

Huh - those used to be double tracked (of course, so was the rest of the FEC, mostly). Interesting.

There is a thread here on the Letchworth Bridge and its potential replacement titled: Portageville High Bridge-Replacement? Letchworth Park, NY

The New York State web page has been updated, but nothing had happened since the last update but a delay in dates and increase in estimated cost.

From their web page, https://www.dot.ny.gov/portagevillebridge

Quote:
Project Status
• The current status of the project is In Development.
•The Bid Opening is expected to be in Spring 2015.
•Construction is expected to begin in Summer 2015.
•Construction is expected to be completed in Winter 2017/2018.

Cost of the Project
The DOT project cost is approximately $70,000,000.

Washout due to erosion in a lineside ditch, rail driven previously to help control the problem.

New Orleans streetcar right of way. A very well engineered system through downtown.
