Digging through some slides I have scanned a series of images from one of the first Jackson Apple Festival trips sponsored by the City of Jackson and the I&O. As a note, this was within the first year of I&OE's operations. Sadly, the I&O is no longer the operator on this line.

Enjoy...

Slowly (about 2 mph), the train will continue to work south toward Leipsic and XN Tower (junction with the CSX). Lots of walking for these guys this day.

Enjoy,

The I&O is starting some much needed TLC of the former DT&I. With the potential of new business from two ethanol plants in northwest Ohio alone, fortunes are looking up.

Here we see CF&E 3880 running lite up the CSX to XN Tower to reenter the former DT&I.

A little further north, the same train rounds the curve. The line must've been slow ordered through here, although it looked to be in good shape. The train was only going about 10mph.

Front of 4071 sitting next to the I&O office at Wch. The old Wellston Sub/Midland Sub diamond is in the foreground. CSX called the Wellston Sub the Fayne Industrial track after abandoning most of the line in the '80s. On the otherside of the diamond was the DT&I crossing of the Midland. The DT&I came up in 1981 after they rebuilt the interchange track to the Wellston Sub at Fayne just north of town. There's a bike path on the ROW for about a half mile on the otherside of Paint Creek.

Here's a pic of 4070 in Washington CH on the WCH-C.

The WCH-C is the new name for the WCH-Norwood turn. It now handles CN traffic for CSX between Cincy and Flat Rock. The CN traffic is handled at night by the WCH-S that runs to Springfield. The I&O still operates #400/401 over NS south of Springfield. They pick up and set out the CN traffic at Springfield for the S Turn.

I rode on that train and have a couple photos for you. I also did volunteer work on the I&O excursion trains in the early 90's on both the Logan line and Jackson line. I don't have much in the way of interesting stories, just some fond memories and a couple pictures.

I&O 81 - By Young_Rider on 10/29/05 at 15:45:58 - 'IO81.jpg' 169 KB
I've been fooling around with a video clip I made off of the Clearblock GT/I&O video (mostly because I wanted a clip of it on my iPod :p) and I made a screenshot of this unit. In this scene at Lagonda, #81's horn is very unusual sounding. I've looked up other pictures of #81 and they show a different horn than this one. Can someone tell me what type this is, and if you've seen the video, why it sounds so different? Thanks in advance.

Re: Best time to see train in Wash. Court House?? - By midland_sub on 07/24/05 at 16:04:30 - 'train_pics_006.jpg' 141 KB
Here's the same spot but 22yrs earlier. This was taken by my father the day the B&O was installing the welded rail on the Ohio Division in Leesburg. In the previous pic of #82 you see the derail for the siding. This orginally was the switch for the siding that ran into the Landmark grain elevator just a bit down the track. This switch is just to the right of the gentleman in the photo.

The yellow and black MOW shed in the background still survives today! It was moved about 20 yrs ago. It currently sits on the outskirts of Leesburg on Rt 28 at the farm next to the rest area on the way to Greenfield.

Re: Best time to see train in Wash. Court House?? - By midland_sub on 07/24/05 at 15:49:54 - 'train_pics_203.jpg' 221 KB
The elevator you saw is still open and is one Clark Southwestern's smaller operations in the area. They have 3 cars sitting on their siding to be loaded Monday. Their siding is the last active customer from the former PRR Morrow Secondary that ran thru Wch. The only other piece of the PRR line is the siding that used to be for Pennington Bread. The Pennington Bread building now hosts a pizza crust co. that doesn't use rail. CSX sort of rebuilt this siding a few years ago to help with local switching but the I&O now uses it to store bad order cars. If anyone is looking for the former Conrail caboose that CSX left on the Midland Sub, it's now shoved to the end of this siding and buried in the weeds and small trees.

I found out that they don't use the six axle power to switch the customers in the industrial park. They first use the 4 axle power then return with the 6 axle power to assemble the empties for the return to Cincy. They build the return train on he Carlton Siding that runs from the Paint Creek trestle near North St to the next bridge over Paint Creek next to Royster Clark. After almost 20yrs of watching CSX back out of the industrial park on the old Wellston line it's really strange to see 2 to 4 big six axle engines pulling 20 to 30 cars with an EOT on the last car on these tracks and onto the Midland Sub heading towards Cincy. If someone didn't know the Wellston Sub was torn up just east of Wch they might think it was a thru train from Chillicothe. Reminds me of the last few years of watching the DT&I run over the Wellston Sub thru Wch.

Here's a pic by my brother-in-law from I think June of '93 of #82 in Leesburg on the Greenfield Line. Either it or #81 were the usual power for the line. Low nose #84 spent 4 or 5 years on the line as the back up power or they would use both during grain season. Both online elevators stopped shipping by rail a few years ago. Though Candle-Lite and the plastic plant in New Vienna both are increasing production so the line needs switched 4 times a week.

Thanks fo the info Mark. I'll be sure and try to plan my next business trip around the I&O's movements so I can catch that big power in action. Sounds like things are really picking up for the I&O on the Midland Sub.
I wish they'd have some kind of run through from the Logan line so we could get some more action over here. I'm getting tired of seeing the ugly GP38-3 and the PIR switcher. I miss the GP30's. The Logan line used to be the stronghold of these fine units. I heard recently that the 81,82, & 83 were scrapped. I was at the Logan shops just days after the 81 & 82 came to town. They didn't even run because both of their electrical systems were burnt out, but a friend of mine who worked for the I&O rewired them. They were great units especially with their high hoods. Had I known their fate sooner, I would've tried to buy one and store it in Nelsonville on the Hocking Valley. Oh well, they live on in my memories.
Anyhow, back to WCH I believe that the two units I saw were the SD45T-2 and the SD45-2. Can't believe they take these out the industrial track. That must be quite a site. Nothing six axle has been over here since the C&O days, so an SD45-2 or a tunnel motor would be something to see.
Oh a question. As I was heading north up court street I saw off to my right a grain elevator in town. Is this still active? Thanks again for the info.

You know dtiman, we may have met. I had the same job as you on these excursions. In 1990 I would've been 12-13 which was the time I was hanging around the I&O the most. Small world isn't it. A good friend of mine used to work for the I&O during this time which was how I got to do all the volunteer work. This picture is of the guy who was in charge during my time there. For the life of me I can't remember his name but I was told by my friend that I was lucky I didn't get my camera broke because this guy didn't like pictures. Maybe you know who he is.

Re: I&OE (Jackson county line) 1993-94 - By IandOFan71 on 05/19/05 at 13:31:05 - '64_at_Jackson.jpg' 69 KB
I used to volunteer on the Jackson excursions and the Logan-Canal Winchester excursion. I worked the concession stand in the diner car and served drinks to the folks in the dome observation car. Imagine trying to balance a tray of drinks up the stairs between Jackson and Hamden!! Anyone who has ridden those rails knows what I mean. Here is a picture of our train flanked on both ends by #64 and #61. I believe that #63 was in Logan at this point. I believe that this was around 1991 or 1992. The interesting thing about this picture is that we weren't done for the night. We were trying to get farther south than here but some idiot parked his pickup truck right on the tracks!! We considered pushing the truck out of the way, but opted for a tow truck instead. Too bad that could have been fun. Got to spend the night in one of the passenger cars which was real nice.

While out cruising our usual railfan haunts, my son and I happened across an I&O southbound at Leipsic, Ohio. What was unique was that the train was being lead by one of the RailAmerica's Chicago, Ft. Wayne & Eastern GP38's, 3880.

Here we see the train (sorry the image is not that great) at Leipsic, Ohio....about a mile north of XN Tower, the junction with the B&O's (CSX) Toledo Subdivision.

Well, I went out again today, and I caught 2 trains. The first has one of the new SP units (an SD45?) in charge, and is in the siding at Tremont.

Something else... - By CG_Tower on 11/26/03 at 00:57:26 - 'ioleipsic.jpg' 112 KB
Back in the earlier days of the I&O, CN power frequently ran through as well.

Here is a set of CN SD's at XN Jct., just south of Leipsic, Ohio. Sometime back in the late 1990's.

With the arrival of some additional power to the I&O fold here in Ohio (read the CEFX former SP locos), I thought this would provide a little reassurance if any one was concerned about the NYS&W SD70M's.

Here is the 4054 at Hamler, Ohio. Photoed today (11/25/03) resting herself on the Hamler passing siding.

I took yet another trip, this time to Lima...and Ford Park on the old DT&I. I followed this train from Ford Park all the way back to Springfield...but it was too dark for pictures past Quincy. Also there was another one of the SD70's headed North at Ford Park.

Finally I caught the train at Maitland. The crew weren't the friendliest people. I think the engineer tried to deafen me on purpose. He laid on the horn like no tomorrow and that road is a dead end road to nothing. And then he gave me the strangest look...you'd think they'd never seen a railfan before. Go figure...

Next up is the trestle where some of the concrete arches of the ford era are dumped. (can't remember the name for the life of me )

I caught one this afternoon. It was a yucky rainy day, but I got a few good pics. This first one is in Quincy, Ohio.

The Susy-Q's SD70' are still regulars here on the I&O. I caught this lash-up coming south onto the B&O (CSX) at XN Tower (south of Leipsic, Ohio) on Thursday. Train is now Z600 on the CSX. The train was mostly steel coil loads, apparently from North Star Steel at Delta.

Railfan trip - By Young_Rider on 04/19/03 at 00:33:51 - 'Tremont2.jpg' 45 KB
I finally had some luck with a railfan trip to the I&O. Here's some Photos around Tremont. They were with a digital camera, so they're not the best, but you get the idea.
