? Big question does anyone have info, photos, adds, on Roundhouse metal tank cars. I haven't found any un-built kits. They are out there somewhere. I've been told there are 2 different styles of tank cars. I looked through some old catalogs seen pictures but nowhere does it say whether they are metal models, or Plastic.

Keeping on with old kit of the 50's and 60's with some 40's and 70's thrown in by mistake, I will post a Varney Metal reefer. It is a 60's car.
 BLATZ BEER, Old Heidelberg Beer.

Note this an especially interesting prototype! The marks on right side tell us this class of cars were assigned to Railway Express, and Storage Mail use.
So, were it to be precisely correct, the cars with "train lines" so could be placed on Passenger runs? Also, the question whether this group of cars on
KATY ran on Passenger design trucks? Ah, I'll let the KATY scholars figure it...

Vern:

Actually, you are probably right.  If Varney painted the car even close to correctly, it's not in box car red, and isn't that the typical box car color in the 1940s and 1950s?

So, if Varney is close to right, that would put the Katy in the same league as the MILW, GN and NYC.  (They are my examples.)  The MILW painted many of their express box cars with a wide yellow stripe on the side of the car-Roundhouse had a box car done that way.  The GN had a green and orange paint scheme on quite a few of their express box cars, and then there's the NYC's red and gray Pacemaker paint scheme.

And even if they were not used on the crack passenger trains, they would be appropriate for secondary trains.

I'm not a Katy expert-I'm just saying it's possible, that's all.

Have a good one.

KATY? Check it out! The line went to a default Lemon Yellow paint, on much of anything that moved, in the era. It was a statement of
the new and improved KATY, following the maxims of John Barriger, IIRC.

Respecting the other solid examples you noted. When the equipment followed same styling as the line's marquee Passenger trains,
it implied much of it was on high speed trucks, and "train lines" to support all the cars in the consists. Recall, a great deal of MILW
rolling stock in its signature Orange.

IMHO, the VARNEY exemplar recalls a Car which could have and would have had assignments on Passenger schedules. U S Mail
and Express run as Passenger, not Freight, work! BTW & N.B.: NYC PACEMAKER Cars runs in "Fast Freight, Merchandise and
Forwarder" movements. It was "Freight Side" work. So were the dramatic B & O SENTINEL SERVICE Cars!

Related Ref.: See http://www.nrrhof.org/pages/Barriger.php  Seems to me the KATY Yellow preceded arrival of John W. Barriger, III...

BTW. Heard the somewhat ugly Weather reports, in that it is expected the Red River is going to be trouble this season. Wishing you
all the best...

A few notes from "The Official Railway Equipment Register" dated Oct. 1961, ref. M-K-T equipment...

45090: Note the earlier with the Black Door, later replica did not carry forward. This in a group 45001 - 45385, noted as
Auto., Box, Steel, Staggered Doors. Classed as XMR, House Car, Automotive Device.

96450: This in a group 95000 - 96800, noted as Box, Steel Underframe. Classed as XM, House Car, General Service.

Note the subtle change in the two different 45090 replicas. The latter marked it for Railway Express service.
In any case, it would need to be on high speed trucks, and equipped with train lines, if run on Passenger schedules.

M-K-T colors? Hit the books, the websites, what have you. Sources may note when the line went to the Yellow paint.
Something is nagging me it went way back. It doesn't help that I have never lived at points local to M-K-T...

Moving on to another HO train maker, Fleischmann. They are known for the european style HO trains. They were less known for there American cars.
* Here is a Reefer made in the way Mantua did their last partial metal reefer cars. a plastic body with painted sheet metal sides.

I was poking through my mantua cars when I found The Katty, MKT, stock cars that Mantua made in the late 50's and 60's in kit form as well as ready to run. They did them in both the brown and yellow.

Tyco-Mantua 40' gondola cars. Baltimore and Ohio RR. The first they made were all metal. There may have been 2 different metal gondolas. I have none of these. I have one of the first plastic bodied ones. All lettering was white , car was black. Baltimore and Ohio was spelt out. The same lettering was used on previously made all metal car. This is the car.

A popular road name in the 40s, 50, and early 60s for gondolas was the Texas and Pacific. Gilbert, Varney, and Mantua all used it. In Gilbert it was there #127 car. One of the first plastic cars they made. It was released in both lite green and gray with the same lettering and number.
* Here is the green version.

A few Varney tank car I'll post in the next 3 replies.
* A very common TEXACO car but the car itself is in surprisingly good condition paint wise. In need of handrails and ladders.
* The Texas Company riveted tank car TXC 6305. most common number for the Varney TEXACO tank car.
